I am going *feral* over the way Xiao Heng calls her xiao limao.

Her name is Li. Jiang Li’s name is obviously also Li.

Xiao Heng knows she isn’t Jiang Li, and he’s basically the only one (besides Tong-er and the other temple maidens) who is 100% certain of her real identity

But they’re both named Li!

When they’re alone he basically never ever calls her “Jiang er-niangzi” (second lady Jiang). He basically only references her connection the Jiang family when they have an audience.

And when he calls her A’Li, that’s basically acknowledging both identities! Both of her families called her that.

But there’s one moment early on when he’s goading her into revealing her true identity, and he says, “Li? Lihua? Or Limao?”

Lihua is a perfectly acceptable girl’s name. Limao is not.

Lihua is obviously referring to the “real” Jiang Li — it means pear blossom, and the show makes it clear that that is her symbol. It also associates pear blossoms with all of the women who have been wronged and die unjust deaths.

Limao is specifically referring to Xue Li, aka Xue Fangfei. The jade pendant from her mother is a cat, and cats are wily, stubborn, and aloof. All things that describe this very strange lady he’s just met.

Xiao Heng’s question is basically, “Are you a delicate noble flower or are you a scrappy stray cat?”

She’s the kind of cat that brings you small dead animals, and he adores her.

When he calls her xiao limao, he means her and only her. Not the real Jiang Li. Not her pretending to be Jiang Li. But also not Xue Fangfei, who loved Shen Yurong and suppressed her own talents and intelligence in service of her husband’s aspirations. He means the woman who dug herself out of her own grave, asked him to arrest her, and uses him however she pleases like a true cat.

My Long Overdue C-Novel List (Part 1)

Two years ago ( i think ) - I shared about reading more C-Novels. In 2021 - 2022 I didn't really watch a lot of shows but I got more into reading. I usually prefer to read historical/wuxia/xianxia type of novels and if that's what you like, maybe you'll enjoy these picks from me too? Note that this list is BL / GL.

I also only read novels with happy endings!

Records of the Missing Sect Master

THE DRAMA. THE SUSPENSE. Filled with mystery and the most satisfying revenge plot, with a faithful ML and a demon sect master MC who is a menace to society. Might not be the easiest novel to pick up as it can be quite confusing at the beginning before all is revealed. But trust me! It's worth the read. I've read this twice.

2. Fox Demon Cultivation Manual

MC accidentally finds himself transformed into a demon. Forced to leave behind his human life, he embarks on a quest to destroy the Demon King who has caused this fate. Full of heartwarming and angsty backstories. I love the interactions between our main couple.

3. Devil Venerable Also Wants To Know

Really interesting twist on the transmigration novel genre. MC encounters a book that describes his life and learns that he is a villain in love with the novel's female protagonist, doomed to die in the novel. Super sweet interactions between MC and his bodyguard ML. I highly recommend this one: slow burn, secret pining, misunderstandings, mystery. Also the female protagonist character is actually hilarious in the story. Quite an easy read to pick up!

4. My Princess Has Been Reborn

The Princess Royal kind of vibes, but GL. Both our leads are reborn, given a second chance at life to turn things around. Only - they both don't know that each other have been reborn! Chaos and intricate palace revenge plots ensue. Planning to re-read this one soon heh.

5. Liu Yao: The Revitalization of Fuyao Sect

(translations for this one are split into two as different groups were working on them.)

This is one of my top picks - I've read it twice as well. A story of how a ragged group of youngsters revive a long declining sect, while unravelling past secrets. The interactions between the sect mates are super wholesome and adorable. Everything is made sweeter with the two main leads with all the tropes that make up a great romance: slowburn, revenge, yearning, dense x overthinker pairing.

I kinda wish they’d cast a sexier guy to play Su Rong… not that this actor in the drama doesn’t have his merits but… come on. His voice is swarmy, he just comes across as kinda bland and miserable… a depressed nerd.

If they had cast that slinky dude from In Blossom, Liu Xueyi, then I’d be having more fun with this story. He’d give the character melancholy and menace… he’d be devious and dastardly… a secretly pining mastermind.

It’s more than just the looks - it’s the whole vibe. These two actors are bringing a different game to any script you give them.

Right? I can imagine being jealous of sir slinky. I can imagine having some complicated feelings if I were the princess if they’d given us a more compelling Su Rong.

This scene was really chilling for me. The fear that Pei Wenxuan showed after this when he hugged her - I felt my heart physically hurt for him.

The horror of knowing that the guy who was your enemy in your past life is not only back, but back with all memories of the past. A past where you could only watch in pain for 20 years, watching as the woman you love, love him.

💀💀💀 the novel version of this scene, where she says 那哥哥要不要教训一下这猫儿? 💀 (well then, does Gege want to teach this kitty cat a lesson?) ... and the next scene where she's slowing tracing circles across his chest with her fingertip asking if he will really be the chaste monk he promised to be while sharing a bed with her and he is like 不过殿下，您要是主动撩我，那可都是债，我一笔一笔都记着，等日后都是要还的。(that said, dianxia, if you knowingly tease me, then that's all a debt that you'll need to square up one day and I'm counting every. single. one.)
