1. Fear
A lot of Maka's fears are pretty well-established in canon -- fear of failure, fear that she's not good enough (all booksmarts and no chops), fear of abandonment or disloyalty.
I always imagine she has this little tiny fear -- more of a discomfort in the back of her mind that expands into anxiety when activated -- that every time she travels to some far-off destination on an assignment, she might run into her mom. And she'll have no fucking idea what to say.
