Lily: Why are your shoes wet?
James: There was a puddle.
Lily: And you stepped in it?
James: Well of course…it was a puddle.

i eat, drink, sleep jily. it’s a lifestyle. it’s my whole personality.
The first night that they spend together in Godric’s Hollow, James keeps her up at the kitchen table until four in the morning tell her all the things he’s excited about doing with their son (he’s sure of it, but she doesn’t know what the baby will be) and in life. Apparently, James is more excited about teaching the baby how to play piano than he is about their child playing Quidditch -which definitely caught Lily by surprise. Then he tells her a week later, at the same kitchen table, after she broke down crying about how worried she is about bringing a child into this war, about raising him while in hiding, he tells her everything that he loves about her. He says- How much she still cares about her sister, Petunia. How fierce she protects the people she loves. Her strength. Her kindness. The way she drinks her hot chocolate and the tangy way she likes her tea. How she laughs at her own jokes. Her freckles. Her eyes. How she once drunkenly admitted to wanting exactly thirteen children because that’s how many cousins and siblings lived with her growing up. The way brown is her favorite color. Her bravery. Her persistence. Then they talk about the baby, and how half of ‘him’ is her so of course ‘he’ will be strong. He tells her that he wishes that she meant his parents because his parents knew about her and he knows that they love her, they loved her enough to tease him about her and ask Sirius- -who spent the summers at the Potter’s house after third year- -if they were together yet. He asks her shyly, and politely, if they could name the baby after them, and maybe Sirius or Remus. “What do you want to name them?” Lily asks, rubbing her stomach. “It has to be better than Bambi.” “Of course.” James, grinning, rolls his eyes before gulping, features taking a more sincere look. “My papa’s name is-” “Fleamont, your middle name.” She says matter of fact. He ignores that she interrupted and continues. “Right, he said it was tradition for the middle name of a male in our family to take their father’s name, instead of just having the first names be the same. But Papa’s middle name was Hari -we can make it more English.” Lily smiles, looking down to her stomach. “So, Hari or Harry James for a boy-” “Harry James?” She didn’t think he should have been able to look as surprised as he was. “What about Sirius?” “It’s tradition, James.” Lily scolds, huffing at him. “I know you love Sirius but we can name another kid after him, where the middle name won’t be tradition important.” Only because she knows him so well can she tell that James is blushing. “You want more?” Green eyes roll at him. “I wouldn’t say that if I didn’t.” She pauses and decides to move on with the conversation past his awe. “What if Bambi’s a girl? We can’t name a girl Hari.” “Well, mum’s name is Euphemia but she hated her name. Papa’s called her Mia as long as I can remember. So…” He hesitates, and that’s how Lily knows he’s taking this seriously. If he stops and slows down for something, he really cares about it. “I was thinking… could we name her Remy Jade. After Remus and you? Mum loved Remus.” Lily throws herself on James and showers him with kisses, agreeing between giggles that whether its a boy or a girl, James picked the perfect name. Because James Potter likes Lily and that’s how he knows what she’d love, but he loves her more than he likes her. And Lily will not let anything- -not a war, not Voldemort, not a disapproving family or doubt- -take him away from her.
patience isn’t a virtue (unless you’re James Potter)

james didn't fall in love with lily the moment they meant, as the rumors would make you believe. it was gradual. it didn't even start until 6th year.
he fell in love because she was strong willed. she stood up for her friends, yelled at people she was upset with, and wasn't afraid to tell someone off because of their narrow minded views. she would confront people with pointed fingers and tight grips and hands on her hips.
she was also hard working. james loved hard working people (see: everyone he liked since 1st year). he would be walking around to go see remus in the library and see her huddled up in a corner studying for a class. he'd see her in hogsmeade helping romserta. he'd see her working hard in potions and be inspired to try a little harder.
that's how it all started: inspiration
he'd see lily in the corner of his eye and try. he'd look for her if he was feeling particularly unmotivated. soon he was just looking for her.
there she was, evans, as beautiful as ever, and he'd smile. he couldn't help but stare. she was the reason he could get on his broom. he only wished he could tell her
one slight problem: she hated him. he may have been a little (extremely) rude to her when they first met. and he made it worse by being an asshole every chance he got, which was all the time.
this led to another problem: she noticed him. she noticed how he always was watching her. she noticed how, whenever she entered a room, his eyes would dart to her.
one day, out of the corner of his eye, he saw her. and immediately panicked, because she had her hands on her hips.
"i need a word with you, potter." she dragged him away by his arm before he could even object, not that he would. he could hear sirius giggling and made a mental note to hex them if he made it back alive.
"you're always staring at me. why?" lily was glaring at him. he swallowed a lump in his throat.
"well," he looked away from her, "i find you pretty?"
she was suspicious, saying things like "no you don't" and "tell me the truth potter"
once she realized he was, in fact, not lying, her face went red. "i'll think about it." she told him, before walking off. he found it odd, because he didn't even ask her out. but, he thought with a big goofy smile on his face, that's just evans for you.
when he came back, he did as he promised(it was a twitchy ear hex, if you want to know. it was very funny), and then later told his friends all about it.
"you're lying." sirius said.
"yeah. evans would never consider dating you." peter agreed.
"for once in my life, i think i agree with sirius -" remus said, earning a punch in the shoulder "- because lily has hated you all these years. why would she start liking you now?"
"because i'm incredibly handsome?"
but it wasn't that. lily saw how hard james would work, too. she'd see how he would dedicate his time to quidditch, and even though he was hardworking, he'd never overwork his team members.
he was caring. she'd see how often james would write to his parents. she'd see how he'd always rush to the hospital wing whenever remus was down there. she saw how gentle he was with sirius, and how he always made sure to have them smiling. she'd see how he would always make sure people apologized if they were rude to remus. he loved his friends. he could see that.
she finally realized that he wasn't that bad when he told her he found her beautiful. she pieced together all the information she had stored in her head and decided he might not be the worst guy in the world to go out with.
so she thought about it. and though and thought. she didn't really figure out her answer until summer break.
when it was 7th year, she was head girl. and he was head boy. she pulled him aside. with no one around, she whispered the words she'd been thinking all summer.
"yes."
