this song kills me everytime
old guy reminisces about concerts and live performance, content warning
probably the best show I ever went to was in 1995ish in fuckin muncie, in -- the band I was in/hung out with/roadied for got on a bill with two other bands so the day of the show we rolled out and headed that way
the venue was a student run thing, and I think we loaded in fairly easily. I found myself talking to the guitarist for one of the other bands -- Punchbuggy, drove down from Ontario -- and he was a super nice guy. all the other guys in the band kinda kept off to themselves playing hockey, but jim was a nice guy and sold me on their music before they even went on.
so the first band goes on, and we were struck by how many styles were represented. the singer went shirtless a la Rollins and hit his chest a lot. the guitarist was a ringer for Kurt Cobain and played to match. the drummer was in a Neil Peart style cage and was playing everything in it.
it was a lot.
Punchbuggy went on, and this is what they opened with
mind blown, this is exactly my jam. I mark out immediately and I'm glued to the whole show. guys in the band are trying to talk to me and I'm like "shut up dude, I wanna hear"
our band starts setting up after their set. I bought the "all nite christian rollerskate" cd from jim. the guys i was with made fun of me and I told them they could go fuck themselves, I had new music
jim wound up leaving the band and going on his own, which tracked, to me: the other three guys had like "friend group" energy. or maybe they were just introverts, I dunno. he's still going
