Lil Punks Club
The Lil Punks was a club founded by eleven teen-aged girls at West High School, Minneapolis, in 1938. The club’s purpose was both social and charitable. The girls planned social events such as a Halloween party with boys, a weekend at a member’s lake cottage, and tea with their mothers. In addition, the girls wanted to “pass on kindness” by singing at nursing homes and hospitals, and making doll clothes and stuffed toys for children.
Lil Punks was organized quite formally, with regular meetings and minutes. The girls sewed matching red and white-checkered skirts and wore them with white blouses as a club uniform. They also designed and wore Lil Punks pins.
After graduating from West High School in 1941 and disbursing to college or business schools, the Lil Punks rarely saw each other. But in 1982, the Club was revived after one of the members took the initiative to contact the others. The women got together at their homes (some members had left Minnesota) or other destinations to enjoy their friendship and see local sights. They met in Minneapolis, New York, San Francisco, Madeline Island, and Naples, Florida. In 2006, the last Lil Punks update in our archival collection, five of the members, now in their eighties, plus two husbands, got together and toured the Minneapolis Institute of Art.

Some boys in a truck sung "that’s what makes you beautiful" in a very crappy sing song voice towards me and one voice added “your coffee”. … I have no idea what that is supposed to mean. That I’m only beautiful when I’m caffeinated? That my coffee is beautiful? That the ones singing thought I was beautiful but the other is a coffee-romantic and not interested in humankind???
