On the return flight from SLC at takeoff, the front tire blew with pieces flying into the right engine. The pilot had to dump fuel for an emergency landing. They were able to land with no injuries. Despite this incident, Trevor still moved to SLC, where he currently resides.
5. Jim Schwing-While growing up out of state, Jim had no expectations for a profession of being more than a truck driver. After a stint as a driver, he quickly realized that he needed to complete his education if he wanted to earn a decent living. After graduating from Ohio State, he came to Utah and hired on with CH2M Hill as a surveyor. Later he joined their engineering department, and recently retired after a fulfilling career. He tells his personal story to the students that he tutors at Franklin in the hopes that they will catch the vision of empowerment, and education as a means to a better life.
6. Ted Schmidt-Formed a non-profit whose mission was to keep kids in school. He had a young student who stole his books in order to attend classes on semester, and then requested funding on the 2nd semester for his books to be paid for. Ted had the non-profit group payback the store for the stolen books, and then provided funding for the books needed for the next semester.
In a second request with the same non-profit organization, a family disowned their teen-age daughter when she became pregnant. Their group assisted her with her schooling costs. The parents then sent the non-profit group a heartfelt ‘thank you’ letter for keeping their daughter in school.
7. Kristy Walker-On a recent trip to China, the group stayed with several Chinese farmer’s families in Xian. The Chinese host family provided a room and a meal for those of us visiting. The bed pillows were stuffed with rice, and the food delicious but modest. The homeowners spoke no English, and we spoke no Chinese. Looking for commonality, we watched a soccer game on TV with the husband. He turned to us and blirted out Tony Parker and Tim Duncan, whereupon we responded Yeo Ming! There is always a way to connect!
8. Matt Heimueller-When any of us go to the hospital with a loved one, we always have an expectation that all will turn out well. Matt had a frightening experience when his wife had to have a minor surgery while pregnant. The anesthesia threw his 6-months pregnant wife into labor, causing great concern to all who were with her. The hospital had to then give her drugs to stop the labor, and luckily for Matt and his wife, she then carried the baby full-term, and both Mom and Baby are healthy and happy.
