“what’s wrong?” usually the sound of seunghyun’s deep voice startled you. not necessarily in a bad way but sometimes he was so quiet that hearing such a voice like that out of nowhere made you jump. you didn’t answer him. how could you? “nothing. I think I need to head home, it’s getting late and I’m tired. tell jiyong I’ll see him tomorrow.” it was sudden. almost rude. seunghyun has never seen you so.. flustered. the color in your face had completely drained and your eyes were large, hands shaky and slightly sweaty.
unfortunately for you he wasn’t going to let this go. once your hand reached the door knob his large frame stood over you, “something’s wrong.” is all he said and you felt small. not scared. but.. unwell. this was your problem and your secret, not his. he didn’t need to know but the evidence was already there as he looked down at your phone screen. at the harsh, cold, and sickening messages from a unknown number.
“what the hell is this?” and his warm hand took the phone right from your cold shaky one, reading each message that had been sent since the beginning of last week. “seunghyun please—” he wouldn’t let you finish and you didn’t want to after seeing the look on his face. “they’re threatening you with dispatch?” you closed your eyes. was this a dream? of course it was! you’d wake up any minute now, right? …right? after hearing him take a deep breath you knew this was reality.
“this is all my fault! I told jiyong that I would stay back during the rehearsal.. I knew something like this would end up happening. this is all my fault. I’m distracting him from you, the group, and the fans. I’m so sorry.” the sound of your heart pounding was so loud in your ears, seunghyun had to of heard. taking the phone back from his hands, you were quick to get out of the messages. not knowing how to respond when everything presented was.. the truth.
“tell him.” you thought this was some unfunny joke when you heard those two words. how could you possibly tell jiyong you’re being threatened? not just with dispatch but death. “are you crazy? how could I tell him this? it’ll make things worse. I.. I need to do something else about it. I’ll figure it out.” and just has his hands reached for the phone again—the door opened, revealing a tired looking jiyong.
you were quick to leave his side and didn’t realize how suspicious and weird everything looked from jiyong’s point of view. his dark eyebrows furrowed and looked between you and seunghyun, “what’s going on?” he was more than tired, he looked and sounded so exhausted. adding all of this onto his already tight and busy schedule would’ve made you a terrible person and you just couldn’t bring yourself to do so. seunghyun? didn’t say a word. his stare was intense and you refused to make eye contact with him. “nothing! I was just.. showing him something I found for you. I don’t need you seeing it, so don’t look!” could you pull this off? no. jiyong wasn’t stupid but unfortunately for you.. it was about to get much worse from this day forward.
weeks went by and things only got worse for both you and jiyong. he hardly spoke to you, called you, looked at you.. didn’t hug or kiss you. it was pure agony and you couldn’t understand why. why would he act so childish and cold towards you? that was until daesung invited you to his house for dinner. just you two which wasn’t abnormal considering you two were the bestest of friends. the messages didn’t stop. the pictures didn’t stop coming in. the threatening to get dispatch involved was more forceful and the death threats.. were even more disturbing than before. at this point cutting all ties with jiyong would be for the best but you couldn’t bring yourself to do it. you loved him.
“we usually joke and have fun when you come over but I think it’s time you tell him what’s going on.” and just as you thought this would all go away, it’s brought up again. “dae—” the faint sound of footsteps stopped you in your tracks, “are you going to let him think you were getting down with seunghyun?” youngbae. you quickly turned around to see him standing behind you, his arms crossed over his chest. “what are you talking about?” were you this clueless? sure for the few weeks he’s been acting like this towards you.. seunghyun has been pushing and pushing for you to tell him. you both being alone in rooms arguing about it. calling each other, texting nonstop. it wasn’t at all what jiyong thought and you felt an intense wave of nausea hit you like a ton of bricks. “why… why would he think such a awful thing? does he seriously think I’m that type of person? to cheat on him?” your vision blurred and a single warm teardrop ran down your cheek.
“hey. don’t cry.” youngbae was always the best at words and comfort. the warmth he gave off was the best feeling ever.. almost as good as how you felt with jiyong. of course both were so different. one was love you yearned for and the other was the comfort of one of your best friends. to have both meant the world to you and it made you feel even more upset to think jiyong thought the worst from you and his best friend.
weeks passed once more. you continued to show up at rehearsals just for daesung and youngbae at least. but.. today was different. a girl was there. one you weren’t too sure about. it was a friend of daesung’s and she happened to be a dancer which they needed for this specific performance. the way she smiled at jiyong and he would smile back made you want to vomit. you felt weak and almost light headed. at this point the stress was overwhelming and your body fell limp. your hands caught ahold of the table in front of you where a guy yelled for you to get off—you’d break the equipment.
jiyong laughing and smiling with that girl just to get back at you was such a immature thing to do and it was the last straw. “let me take you home.” seunghyun’s deep voice came from the side of you and you shook your head, pushing him away from you. “this is all because of me. I’ll be leaving on my own. don’t call me. text me. I don’t care anymore.” that didn’t stop him from grabbing ahold of you, “you’re not leaving by yourself in this condition.” maybe that was the final straw. you pushed him. hard. using the rest of whatever strength you had left. “I said leave me alone!!” your shaky hands grabbed ahold of your bag and you slowly made your way out of the building you didn’t ever want to see again. all alone you’ve had to endure so much pain and suffering and the final straw was jiyong not caring enough to know or acknowledge that you obviously haven’t been okay for weeks now.
but.. who’s fault was that? your own. this could have all been avoided if you both had acted like the adults you were. sadly you didn’t have your car which meant it was bus waiting time, something you absolutely hated the most. “this is so unfair..” you muttered to yourself and thankfully no one else was around. at least that’s what you thought. for just a few seconds you had closed your eyes, resting them, wanting them to stop burning from the no sleep you were getting. maybe allowing them to close and rest would help them but your body needed real genuine rest, not manipulation.
slowly opening them, you found yourself looking at someone’s shoe. it frightened you. slowly looking up your eyes met with a younger girl who looked sweet and kind but something was off. “um may I help you..?” she didn’t reply. the stare was intense, dark, and cold. it send shivers down your spine and something told you to move. get out of there. before you could she raised her own hand and grabbed a fist full of your hair pulling you to the ground. “dirty bitch!” the first kick met with your ribs which instantly knocked the wind out of you. a gasp left your lips and your hands moved up to grab onto your own side but she kicked again, stinging radiating down your finger. words weren’t able to form and you couldn’t even scream. you felt stuck. could you.. die from this? your last goodbye was fighting with jiyong for weeks and even shoving seunghyun. how awful were you. a tear rolled down your warm cheek and before you could endure another kick, the girl flung to the side—being pushed by another female and a shouting male coming up to your side. the smell. it was jiyong. his hands cupped your face and immediately pulled you into his chest. he promised before you two started dating that he would protect you no matter the date or time. no matter the situation it was.
“I’m so sorry this happened. why didn’t you tell me any of this was happening? you had me.. you had me, I don’t even want to say it.” and he didn’t. you knew what it was but refused to say anything about it as well just leaving it at that. why jiyong would still have such insecurities when he was a perfect soul was beyond you. “I’m sorry.” your voice cracked. for the past few weeks you’ve dealt with nothing but fear and anxiety. all because you couldn’t tell jiyong what was happening which only hurt you both in the end. lesson learned.
without another word, jiyong leans in to press a single soft kiss to your lips before helping you to your feet again. you wince in pain and he immediately pulls you into him, your head resting against his own. “hey. I called the cops and they’re on the way. you need to report all of this okay?” daesung’s friend. the one jiyong had been.. dancing with, laughing with, and smiling at. she was sweet and sincere which made you feel worse about the situation. “thank you.” is all you said with a gentle smile. she smiled back before walking away.
weeks passed again. this time? you and jiyong were fine. charges were pressed and things were being taken care of which meant that you and him both would be safe. the relationship? not so much. dispatch had been involved before you knew it and published the article within seconds after everything had happened that day. jiyong wasn’t sweating it so why should you? he even posted an instagram story of you both in the studio. he wasn’t afraid to show you off nor was he afraid for everyone to know just how much he cared for you and needed you. “what do you think of this beat?” you tilted your head to the side and nodded along to it.
jiyong stared at you the entire time. reaching up to trace your pretty features with his finger before leaning towards you, placing a few soft and gentle kisses around your face. “hey! focus.” you playfully scolded him and his cheeks turned a faint pink color. “how can I when the most beautiful girl is sitting next to me?” it was your turn to be flustered. jiyong always knew what to say to make you feel like the luckiest girl ever.

From his place on the floor of the YG mens locker room, partially hidden behind some empty boxes, Jiyong yawned as quietly as he could & checked the time on his phone. 5am. That meant that most of the early employees should start arriving soon. He felt himself smile and excitement bubbled up in his chest. This time he was finally going to figure it out...
The chocolates had begun mysteriously appearing in his locker on Valentine's day of 2007. Bigbang had made their debut, but hadn't quite managed to find that hit song that he was so sure he'd be able to write sooner or later.
After an incredibly long and tiring day of dance practice he'd opened up his locker, only to find a tiny white box sitting on the shelf inside. The box was plain, not even a bow or a note in sight. Curiosity got the better of him as he carefully extracted the little package from it's hiding place, turning it over in his hand to see if he could figure out what it was.
“Hey!” he called out to the other four men. “Did any of you guys slip this into my locker?”
He held the box up so they could all see it, but every man shook his head.
“What is it?” Seunghyun asked, his voice a bit muffled as he changed shirts.
“If I knew that, do you think I'd be asking who put it here?”
“Well, open it!” Youngbae encouraged.
Jiyong eyed his best friend warily, but decided he was right... the only way to find out was to open the damn thing. He slid his thumb along the flap and pulled it back. He had to fight the urge to laugh as the whole group crowded around him in order to see what his unexpected gift was.
A single chocolate truffle was all the box contained. It was sad looking and irregularly shaped, clearly a homemade attempt. Jiyong reached into the box with trembling fingers, picking up the chocolate in between his forefinger and his thumb so he could examine it closer. It was obviously dark chocolate, covered in a layer of cocoa powder. But it still had a faint scent of something else...
'Oranges, maybe?' he thought to himself.
“Awww.... Jiyongie got himself a Valentine!” Youngbae teased.
“Who's it from?” the maknae asked.
“I have no idea.” Jiyong whispered, just before he held it up to his lips and took a bite.
Despite the yelling protests of his friends, telling him he was insane for eating something from an unknown sender, Jiyong was in heaven.
He had been right. The slightly bitter flavor of the cocoa powder hit his tongue first, followed quickly by the sweetness of the rich chocolate as he chewed the soft confection slowly. Only after he swallowed did he taste the orange and something slightly more astringent... probably alcohol of some sort. A satisfied groan came from somewhere deep within Jiyong's chest.
“Damn...” Seunghyun swore under his breath. “Must have tasted better than it looked. Can I have the other half?” he looked at the leader hopefully.
“No.” said Jiyong simply & then popped the rest of the treat into his mouth. This was his very first Valentine's chocolate and he was not in the mood to share it.
The guys just shook their heads and went back to getting ready, all interest in teasing Jiyong was lost now that the chocolate was gone.
And that was how it had started.
Jiyong had received “mystery chocolates” in his locker every Valentine's Day from there on out, with the exception of the couple of years he'd actually had a girlfriend. And on those years, he'd found himself seriously missing the candies. So much so, that he'd started to make absolutely sure he was single on Valentine's Day, just so he'd be guaranteed to get his chocolates.
Over the years the number of candies had multiplied and improved in quality. The second year, there had been four of the same that he'd gotten the first time. Each one a little rounder & more expertly shaped than the one before. And it had just snowballed from there... fillings and toppings had changed, there was now a mix of dark, milk and white chocolate. And, he had to admit, the candy itself had gotten prettier, more well made. Practice made perfect, Jiyong supposed. But the boxes, even though they'd been getting steadily bigger, were always plain & white with no indication whatsoever as to who kept leaving them in his locker.
Jiyong heard the door to the room open, jolting him from his memories. He watched as a shadowy figure crept into the room and headed straight for his locker. Patiently he waited... the “chocolatier” as he'd come to think of her, opened his locker quietly, pulled a container from her bag, and slid it into place on the shelf. Then she stealthily shut the door to the locker and turned around.
That was when Jiyong sprung his trap.
“A-ha!” he yelled in triumph, flipping up the light switch and flooding the room with the harsh glow of florescents. “I've gotcha now!”
You screamed and flattened yourself against the row of lockers at the sudden invasion of light.
Jiyong stood there just blinking, trying to give his eyes time to adjust.
“Ji... Jiyong?” your voice wavered in shock and a slight tinge of fear. “You scared me to death!” you held a hand to your chest, attempting to slow the frantic beating of your heart.
“______________-ah?” Jiyong asked, his voice sounding confused, but intrigued at the same time. He couldn't imagine that you, of all people, turned out to be his mysterious Valentine chocolate maker.
You'd begun working at YG in 2005, starting as an unpaid intern, basically running errands and cleaning. Through the years, you had managed to work your way up through the company based solely on hard work and perseverance. You moved over to working with the Coordi Noona's on wardrobe & then transferred to the set and stage team. Now you were incredibly proud to be able to say that you were the main set designer for all of Bigbang's concerts. It was a job that you loved and hated at the same time. Because it helped keep you close to Jiyong, the man you had come to love and accept that you could never have. So, you made a compromise with yourself to make him chocolate every Valentine's Day, never letting him know who they were actually from, because you knew that his rejection would absolutely wreck you.
Jiyong moved around the boxes he'd been using as cover and strode over to stand in front of you, dangerously close.
“So... you're my 'chocolateir'?” he asked with a smirk.
“I...” it was on the tip of your tongue to say that you didn't know what he was talking about, but you knew it was no use. You'd been caught & now would come the rejection and humiliation that you had been so scared of for years. That's why you had placed them in his locker in secret in the first place, you didn't have the courage to face Jiyong and admit your feelings.
He simply reached around you and deftly popped his locker open, reaching in and coming out with the simple white box in hand.
“Jiyong, I...” you started to explain, but he just held a finger up to your lips.
“Shhhhh.....” he said with a smile as he pried the lid open.
You watched as his face lit up like a little kid, looking at the variety of chocolates in the box this year. He pointed to a white chocolate one that you'd made for the first time. “What's this one?”
“Raspberry mousse.” you told him flatly.
“And this?” he pointed out another.
“Pistachio.” you sighed.
Jiyong took his time looking the box over, but the longer he took, the more his delighted face turned into a frown.
“Where's the orange ones?” he pouted.
“What?”
“The orange ones!” he whined. “You know... like the first one you made me.” Jiyong looked at you then, his brown eyes pleading.
“Oh....” you chuckled. “those are on the second layer.” you reached over and lifted the first section of the box to reveal the tier below.
Jiyong's eyes grew wide as he saw that the entire second box was filled with nothing but the orange truffles that he loved so much. Without hesitation, he reached in and lifted one out, popping it into his mouth in a single bite and moaning aloud, just as he had the first time.
You felt yourself shiver as Jiyong ate the truffle. Watching as his eyes slid closed in complete bliss and the sound of satisfaction escaped his chest. You couldn't help but feel proud that your chocolate making skills had managed to elicit such a response.
“They aren't orange.” you whispered, not sure why you felt the need to correct him on such a small detail.
“What?” his eyes popped open in shock, the moment ruined.
“The truffles...” you stammered. “They aren't orange. They're Grand Marneir.”
Jiyoing grinned. “I thought I tasted alcohol...”
“I, uh... I learned how to make them from my aunt.” you admitted shyly.
“And the rest?”
“Well, at first I just watched videos online and eventually I took some local classes on chocolate making.” you said quietly, not really sure why you were admitting all this to him.
“All that... just for me?” he asked, carefully taking the first layer from you & setting both down on the nearby wooden bench.
You just nodded, suddenly unsure of what to say.
Jiyong turned back to face you, his face suddenly serious. “All this time... why not just tell me, _______-ah?”
“I...” you briefly thought about lying, but you couldn't bring yourself to do it. “I... wanted to wait until they were perfect. And I was... I was afraid you wouldn’t return my feelings.” you looked dejectedly at the floor, certain that he was going to try and turn you down as gently as he could. You couldn't bear to watch his face as he did it.
To your great surprise you felt Jiyong step into your space. One hand snaked around your waist, coming to rest at the small of your back. His other hand gently came up under your chin, tilting your face so that you were forced to look at him.
“They're already perfect.” he murmured. “They were from the very beginning.”
You opened your mouth to protest, because even you had to admit that the first truffle you'd left him had been positively ugly. Instead Jiyong slid his mouth over yours, objectively swallowing anything you were about to say.
The kiss shocked you at first, but once you realized there was actually feeling behind it on his part, you began to kiss him back eagerly. You wound your arms around him, pulling Jiyong even closer to you.
There was a hint of dark chocolate & Grand Marnier and you found that couldn't get enough now that you'd finally gotten a taste of him.
After a while, he broke the kiss and pulled back slightly, his lips still barely touching yours. “You were my first Valentine.” he admitted breathlessly.
“Really?” you gave him a dubious look.
“Honest.” he smiled. “You can ask the guys if you don't believe me.”
You returned his smile, leaned forward and gave him another small kiss.
“Can I also be your last Valentine?”
Jiyong pulled you into a tight hug, whispering into your ear, “I'd love that, actually... just as long as you always make me those orange truffles.”
“Deal.”
Jiyong exhaled a breath that he hadn't realized he'd been holding and chuckled. He pulled back so that he could look at you.
“Fair warning, _________-ah. I feel like I should tell you to brace yourself.” he said, his face suddenly serious.
“Brace myself?” you asked, confused. “For what?”
“I have a lot of White Day's to make up for...” he said, winking at you before leaning in for another kiss.

“Why do you keep looking at the map?” Jiyong asked for probably the eighteenth time.
“Because,” you muttered through clenched teeth -- for probably the eighteenth time. “I don’t trust your navigation skills, and I think we’re lost!”
Actually, you’d thought he’d gotten lost about two hours ago. If only you’d had the courage to tell him back then -- the two of you would be back on the right track now!
...Oh, wait.
You had told him back then! He, being the insufferable, stubborn ass that he was, just hadn’t listened! And now you were still lost!
Though, not according to him.
“We are not lost,” he sighed, his annoyance very obvious as he spoke to you. “I know exactly where I’m going, so just calm down.”
“Don’t tell me to calm down,” you retorted.
You quickly snapped your gaze back to the map because you knew Jiyong’s response to your words would be a frustratingly annoying roll of his eyes, and you weren’t sure what you would do if you saw him roll his eyes at you. Your patience was already hanging by a thread -- it could (and likely would) snap at any time.
But looking back at the map reminded you that... you had no idea where you were.
“I can’t even find where we are on the map!” you pointed out, your forehead wrinkled with both irritation and concern.
“I told you,” Jiyong sighed. “I know where we are. Just put the map down, you’re getting --”
“Don’t,” you interrupted harshly. “Even finish that sentence.”
To be honest, you were actually kind of afraid what you would’ve done if he had finished that sentence. Absolutely nothing good, of that you were certain.
Thankfully -- and somewhat surprisingly -- Jiyong took your advice, pressing his lips together and continuing on driving.
Also somewhat surprisingly, you took Jiyong’s advice and put the map down. It was very clear he didn’t know where he was going, but it was also very clear that he wasn’t going to admit it. He was just going to keep driving until... well, you had absolutely no idea. Until he fell asleep, probably. And then where would you be?
With an internal sigh, you leaned over and pressed your forehead against the cool glass of his car window, closing your eyes and trying to think of exactly what to say to your best friend when you finally saw her again.
You wouldn’t even be in this mess if it wasn’t for her, after all. This was all her fault! ...Sort of. Right now, she was the easiest person to blame, so that’s what you were going to do. Blame her -- and her soon-to-be husband, of course.
Okay, here’s the backstory of how you’d gotten to this point: Your best friend had been dating Jiyong’s best friend since your university days. You had met Jiyong several times, obviously, but you’d never actually hung out, gotten to know each other, or become friends in any way, shape, or form. Not because you didn’t want to, just... because you didn’t. Jiyong had majored in music production, and you had majored in cognitive science with a focus on artificial intelligence.
So, basically, the two of you had lived in two completely different worlds.
But, now, quite a few years after graduating, your best friends were getting married.
Jiyong had been chosen as the Best Man for the groom, and you had been chosen as the Maid of Honor for the bride. But you hadn’t really had to interact or plan anything with each other... until now.
For some reason you really and truly couldn’t explain, the bride and groom had chosen to have a joint bachelor and bachelorette party up in some remote cabin in the mountains -- a perfect setting for a horror film, in your opinion.
But what’s even worse: they had asked you and Jiyong to go up ahead of time to get things ready.
Together.
In the same car.
For... bonding time.
So, that’s how you’d gotten here. In the car. With Jiyong. Lost. On some practically deserted, hardly paved, winding road with no cell phone service (hence the paper map you’d had to resort to).
“Oh, come on,” Jiyong chuckled. “We’re almost there, trust me.”
You weren’t even going to dignify that with a response -- mainly because you didn’t want to divulge your trust issues to someone you barely knew. But also because you just didn’t want to give him the satisfaction of any sort of reply.
But when you just barely lifted your eyelids, you noticed that the sun was beginning to set.
Great.
If you had been in charge of this little road trip, the two of you would be at the cabin right now. But, no. You had been too nice and had let Jiyong drive, and now look where that had gotten you: in the middle of nowhere.
And you would never, ever, ever admit to him that the reason you’d been too nice and had let him drive was because you were actually kind of scared of him.
You didn’t even want to admit that to yourself.
But you worked with technology all day! Machines, you were used to. People... not so much.
And Jiyong was just... a lot. He was quiet on the outside but definitely not on the inside.
He was supremely confident and wildly intimidating, two traits you’d never quite gotten the hang of.
Although, he did occasionally sport some wild hair colors -- currently, his locks were a nice mix of bright orange and fiery red -- so he wasn’t always quiet on the outside.
But, anyway -- his supreme confidence wasn’t going to help you now because whether he knew it or not, you were, indeed, very, very lost. And it was going to be getting dark within the hour.
You then spotted a building way up ahead, sitting up straight and squinting to try and make out what it was.
“If you know where we are,” you began, not doing anything to hide the skepticism in your voice. “Then what is that?”
“That... is a building,” Jiyong answered.
“Oh, wow,” you scoffed. “Now I definitely believe that you know where we are. There’s no way you could’ve known that was a building without being familiar with this area.”
You took a risk and glanced over at him, but instead of seeing some smug, smarmy expression on his face... he was smiling. But not in a way that made you want to slap it right off his lips. His smile was... like... amused. And then you realized he was laughing.
“Well, I’m glad you think you’re funny because I certainly don’t,” you told him, your brow knit together so tightly that you were fairly certain you would have a headache soon.
Jiyong sputtered out a chuckle, returning your gaze briefly as he sported a pretty adorable grin on his face.
Oh, god. Why had you just thought his grin was adorable?
I mean... objectively, it was adorable. When he wasn’t smiling, he looked scary and threatening and like he was meticulously plotting your slow demise.
But when he smiled? It lit up his face and his eyes crinkled and you could see just a smidge more of his gums than your average smile and just -- he looked like a totally different person in a very good way.
But no matter how adorable his grin was and no matter how much his face was transformed by it, he was still an overly arrogant piece of --
“What?” he said with a somewhat taunting lilt to his voice. “It is a building.”
You simply replied with a scowl. Not only because you were not amused by his observation but also because he had interrupted your thoughts before you could properly, in your mind, call him an overly arrogant piece of --
“Okay, okay,” he relented. “Since you’re so concerned, I’ll stop at that building and make sure we’re going the right way. Because we are.”
“What if that building turns out to be abandoned? Or the house of a serial killer?” you asked, deciding to just give up on calling him silent names and turning away to look out the window.
Jiyong simply shrugged. “Then we keep going. Or we die.”
“Uh, excuse me,” you sputtered. “There is no we. You’re getting out of this car by your damn self.”
“But we’re supposed to be bonding,” he pointed out, and even though you were no longer looking at him, you could so very clearly hear the smirk in his tone.
“Dying together is not my idea of quality bonding time.”
A breathy chuckle escaped through Jiyong’s nose, and you looked back over at him with a very triumphant expression.
“See? You’re not the only one who can be funny,” you quipped.
“So, you admit what I said was funny,” he stated rather than asked.
“You thought it was funny.”
“And that’s really all that matters,” he nodded. “At least to me.”
At that, you merely raised your eyebrows and, yet again, shifted your gaze toward the car window.
There was semi-awkward silence between the two of you as Jiyong drove up to the building -- which turned out to be just a house, presumably. After parking off to the side of the road you’d been traveling, Jiyong turned off the car and leaned forward a bit in his seat to look at you.
“You sure you don’t wanna come with me?” he asked, his voice low as the engine cutting off had made it eerily silent.
“Oh, I’m sure,” you nodded. “You go right ahead.”
Jiyong took the keys out of the ignition then, jingling them a little before closing his fist around them. “Well, I’m taking these.”
“I wasn’t going to drive off without you!” you scoffed.
“Yeah, but now if I do get abducted by a serial killer, you have to come in and rescue me if you want to escape.”
...Okay, you had to admit. That was... kind of a genius plan.
Damn it.
“Just go,” you sighed with a weary shake of your head.
Jiyong murmured an ‘okay’ before unlocking the car door and hoisting himself out. You jumped slightly when he slammed it closed, but your eyes never left him as he loped up toward the house.
Your heart began to race as he approached the front door. You gulped anxiously when he lifted one hand and knocked. You clenched your fists in your lap when the door opened.
A short, middle-aged woman answered, and you almost immediately eased up a bit. She certainly didn’t fit the serial killer profile, and Jiyong was quite a few inches taller than her. He was skinny as a rail, but he could still probably take her if he had to.
You were too far away to make out any of the conversation between them, but the woman’s body language and expression both seemed very warm and welcoming. If you were a gambler, you would bet she was giving Jiyong directions to lead him to the right way.
Jiyong simply stood there nodding, though you knew without a doubt he was taking every and any opportunity to smooth-talk her.
Then, suddenly, Jiyong turned around and gestured to you, his lips curved into a smile. The woman waved at you, and you lifted one hand to awkwardly wave back.
If she was just giving him directions, why in the world would he bring you into it? There was no need for the woman to know about or wave at you... What, exactly, was he doing?
After another minute or two of conversation, the woman began to back into her house, one hand on the side of the front door as she got ready to close it. Jiyong, on the other hand, turned sideways a bit in preparation for turning around and heading back to the car. He quickly put his hands together palm-to-palm in front of his chest and bowed slightly to the woman, thanking her before turning on his heel and striding toward you.
Your eyes got wider as you watched him head, not for the driver’s side, but to the passenger’s side -- to your side. Why was he coming over here? And he had the keys, so you couldn’t roll the window down.
When he got to his car, he reached for your door handle and pulled it open. You instinctively leaned back a little, but then he leaned forward, ducking his head into the car and getting uncomfortably close to you.
“So, yeah,” he murmured. “We’re lost, and the closest way back is the way we came, but I don’t have enough gas to get us back there, and it’ll be too dark to drive soon.”
Before you could let out a victorious ha! and rub it in his face that you’d been right all along, Jiyong continued.
“This happens on occasion, so the woman who lives here has set up an extra room for people like us to stay in overnight.”
“Are you --”
“It’s our only choice,” he cut in, his voice sharp. “Either that or we sleep in the car.”
You honestly weren’t sure which one sounded less appealing: sleeping in a stranger’s house in the middle of nowhere or sleeping in Jiyong’s car in the middle of nowhere.
Well, at least in a house, there was food. And better protection from bears. Or mountain lions. Or whatever creatures lived around here.
So, you relented with a sigh and a shrug of your shoulders.
“Yeah, that’s what I thought,” he muttered.
You moved to undo your seatbelt, but Jiyong stopped you with a soft clear of his throat.
“Oh, and... uh... but there is this... one... stipulation.”
You paused, furrowing your brow with confusion and tilting your head up to look at him. “...What?”
“So... here’s the thing.”
Oh, you did not like the sound of that.
“Just tell me,” you ground out.
“She only has one room, and I had to tell her we’re engaged otherwise I don’t think she would’ve let us stay here.”
...Your heart jumped into your throat. Your stomach fell down to your feet.
You stared at him, blinking.
And then you finally managed to get out, “You had to tell her what now?”
“She asked if I was alone, so I said I wasn’t and that’s when I turned around to show her you were waiting in the car, and then she asked if you were my wife, so obviously, I said you weren’t, but then she started to say something that sounded like she really doesn’t let just anyone in -- I mean, you can’t blame her because, like you said, there could be serial killers. So, I just blurted out that we’re engaged and will be married soon, and she said that was perfect and we can stay for the night.”
So... if you were hearing him correctly, the woman inside that house -- the only building around for miles, so it seems, and the only way you’ll be sleeping safely for the night -- was letting you and Jiyong stay here under the misconception that the two of you were... engaged? To be married?
You inhaled deeply, letting it out very slowly before politely and quietly asking Jiyong to let you get out of the car.
He stepped aside, and you methodically unbuckled your seatbelt. You swung your legs over the side of your seat, and you put your feet on the ground. You stood up, and you turned to face Jiyong.
And then you reached out and hit his upper arm.
“Are you crazy?!” you hissed, feeling your frown on every inch of your face.
“Ouch!”
“Oh, we haven’t even scratched the surface of ouch,” you warned him before hitting him again. “Why -- why would you tell her that we’re engaged?!”
When you geared up for another hit, Jiyong’s hand darted out to grab onto your wrist. “Didn’t you hear me?! I don’t think she was going to let us stay here if we weren’t! She must be one of those super old-fashioned ladies -- I mean, come on. We’re in the middle of nowhere. The last time she watched something current on TV was probably decades ago.”
“But still! Engaged?!” you cried, using every mental muscle in your body to not sound like a shrill witch.
“I’m sorry! It didn’t feel like I had a choice, and I panicked!”
“Yeah, you should be sorry! You’re the one who got us lost in the first place, and you wouldn’t have been in the situation to panic if you had just listened to me!”
Jiyong carefully let go of your wrist, though he still kept his hand up at the ready in case he needed to protect himself again. And then he plastered a very convincingly apologetic expression on his features.
“You... are right. You’re right. I did get us lost, and if I had listened to you, we wouldn’t be in this situation right now. I’m sincerely sorry, and I understand and accept that you have every right to be angry with me.”
Your jaw fell open with utter shock.
...All of those words had really come out of his mouth?
His mouth? Jiyong’s mouth?
“When we actually get to the cabin, I give you full permission to shit talk me as much as you need to, but tonight... I really need you to play along. Without this lady’s help, we’ll probably just get lost again, and we won’t get any gas or food, so we just --”
“Okay, fine,” you interrupted. “I just have one question.”
Jiyong’s eyebrows rushed up his forehead, and he waited for you to ask it.
You simply lifted up your left hand, your palm facing you, and wiggled your fingers. “Where’s my ring?”
“I, being so much in love to the point of distraction, bought a ring that was too big, so it’s at the jeweler’s getting resized.”
Your head jerked back with surprise. “Wha -- um... you thought of that really quickly.”
“What can I say?” Jiyong smirked, lifting his shoulders in smug satisfaction. “I’m quick on my feet. She said she’s putting dinner on the table right now, so just leave all the talking to me.”
Well. Humble, repentant Jiyong had been nice while he’d lasted.
God, this was so painful.
After lugging your overnight bags into the house, you and Jiyong had almost immediately sat down to dinner with Mrs. Elderberry, and she had almost immediately started asking about the two of you.
You had been incredibly curious to hear what Jiyong would come up with, but to your slight disappointment, he had basically told her the actual story of how you knew each other -- you had gone to university together and your best friends had dated each other. He had simply added on that you had fallen in love and were now getting ready to be married.
And, apparently, your first date had been to an old-fashioned drive-in movie theater. Mrs. Elderberry had thoroughly enjoyed that, and it was then you realized just how smart Jiyong was.
Not when it came to directions, of course, but when it came to people. He knew your hostess for the night was old-fashioned, so he’d thought of an old-fashioned first date to endear the two of you as a couple to her.
She had also believed his story about getting your ring resized, so you decided that leaving all the talking to Jiyong (he’d explained that you were frightfully shy) had actually been a good idea.
But still. It was painful. Listening to Jiyong wax poetic about how in love the two of you were was not a pleasant dinner soundtrack. Or one you’d ever thought you’d have to experience.
Ever.
Though... you had to admit... the way he described you to Mrs. Elderberry was scarily accurate. He knew your job, he knew you were shy and reserved unless it mattered (like when he had gotten you more lost than you’d ever been in your life -- you certainly hadn’t been willing to keep quiet about that), he knew you preferred video games over books even though you did still like books, and he knew you were a cat person. He even called you “smart as a whip.”
At the end of the meal, Jiyong volunteered the two of you for clean up duty, something which you heartily agreed to since Mrs. Elderberry had refused to take any money for the room.
Your hostess shuffled into her living room to “catch up on her stories” -- though when you heard the television come on, you definitely heard the theme song for a soap opera that was at least twenty years old... -- and you sidled up next to Jiyong at the sink to help with the dishes.
And since this whole situation was just absurd, you found your shyness had basically vanished completely. So, you came out and asked, “How do you know so much about me? Everything you told her was true, and it kind of freaked me out, to be honest.”
Jiyong lifted one shoulder into a half-shrug, letting out a breathless chuckle as he rinsed off a plate. “I’m just observant. I pick up on things easily, and I get to know people quickly.”
“That’s... impressive,” you admitted.
He murmured his thanks, and then the two of you continued on doing the dishes in companionable silence.
As soon as the kitchen was clean, Jiyong poked his head into the living room and let Mrs. Elderberry know the two of you had been in the car for so long today and were simply exhausted and were going to head up to bed.
...You froze right there at the sink.
How had you completely forgotten about that? The whole... sleeping situation. The fact that Mrs. Elderberry had a room -- one. One room. A single room.
And there were two of you.
And if she wouldn’t let an unmarried -- or unengaged -- couple spend the night here, you had to assume there was just one bed.
“Hey, you coming?” Jiyong murmured, interrupting your thoughts and making you jump a little bit.
“Hmm? Oh -- yeah. Yeah, I’m coming.”
He raised one eyebrow at you, obviously suspicious of your awkward stammering. “Are... you okay?”
You just nodded quickly but, apparently, it was enough for Jiyong because he headed over to your bags and picked both of them up to carry upstairs.
“Up the stairs, first door on your left!” Mrs. Elderberry called out as you began to ascend the staircase following Jiyong.
“Thank you so much, Mrs. Elderberry,” Jiyong called out in response. “We truly appreciate this.”
“Yeah, unless she kills us in our sleep,” you muttered.
“Good night!” Jiyong cried, but you knew he’d heard you. And, sure enough, once he reached the landing at the top of the stairs, he turned to you with a reprimanding expression. “You really think she could kill us?”
“Did you watch and make sure she was eating from the same serving plates as us? Our dinner could have been poisoned.”
You knew it wasn’t likely -- in the least -- but still! You never know!
“Okay, if anyone is going to kill you, it’s going to be one of those robots you work with,” he chuckled, shaking his head.
“That is absolutely not true. And I don’t work with robots! I just help design smart AI --”
Jiyong opened his mouth to interject, but you finished your sentence before he had the chance.
“For tech support chats. You know when you’re on shopping websites and that little thing pops up asking if you need help?”
“...That’s you?”
“That’s me,” you grinned. “Well. Kind of. I help design it. And make it smarter.”
“Ah... so... you’re not helping build an army of robots who are going to eventually take over the world?”
You shook your head. “No. Not yet. But probably someday.”
Jiyong snorted with amusement before turning and heading to the first door on the left, standing aside to allow you to open it since he was carrying both of your overnight bags.
Even though you knew there would only be one bed, you had still held out some hope that maybe -- just maybe -- there would be two smaller ones instead of one bigger one. If Mrs. Elderberry was truly old-fashioned, she would’ve set up her guest room like the mom and dad’s bedrooms on those black and white television shows -- the kind where they slept in separate beds even though they were married.
But, alas. When you opened the door... there it was.
The one bed.
“I can sleep on the floor,” you said hastily, not even waiting a second after closing the door behind you.
You were expecting Jiyong to let you, but surprisingly, he replied with, “No, that’s okay. I got it. I’m the one who got us into this, so it’s only fair.”
Would you ever get used to Jiyong admitting he had been wrong? For as long as you’d known him, you’d never witnessed him do that -- and now, he had done it twice. In the same night.
“Are you sure? You could probably use a comfortable mattress. You must be exhausted from accepting so much guilt tonight.”
“Hey, now,” Jiyong chuckled. “When I’m wrong, I say I’m wrong.”
“Uh, only after you’ve found unavoidable proof that you are,” you pointed out. “Do you remember how many times I said we were lost?”
“Yeah, well --”
“You just don’t trust me,” you said, half-teasing but half-serious. He had every right not to trust you, though -- you’d known each other for a long time but not well enough to have developed any sort of trust.
Plus, you still had the aforementioned trust issues, but we won’t get into that.
“I thought I knew where I was going!”
“So, you just wouldn’t even listen to me,” you tsked. And then you let out a soft gasp. “You wouldn’t listen to me because I’m a girl, and girls are bad with directions!”
Jiyong had been rifling around in his bag to find his toothbrush, but your words made him spring up and look at you aghast.
“That’s not true!”
“Oh, really?” you smirked. “You just honestly thought you were 100% right and there was no way you could be wrong?”
And then something happened you truly never expected: Jiyong looked... embarrassed. And shy.
“No...” he said slowly, drawing the word out in a very unconfident manner.
What was going on? You’d only ever seen Jiyong in a state of complete self-assurance, so this was kind of throwing you off-balance.
“I just...” he continued, lifting one shoulder into a half-shrug. “I didn’t want to look stupid in front of you.”
You almost choked on the air you were breathing.
Jiyong? Didn’t want to look stupid? In front of you?
“Wh --”
“You’re, like, crazy smart,” he interrupted. “And I guess... I just wanted to prove that...”
But he trailed off and didn’t finish his sentence, leaving you just as dismayed.
“But... I mean, you kind of are a genius,” you pointed out after a few awkward moments.
“Yeah, when it comes to music.”
Ah. There was the confidence. But, according to your best friend, he really was a bomb music producer. So, his confidence wasn’t unfounded in this particular instance.
“Well, I certainly couldn’t create or produce or even sing a song if my life depended on it. That’s something I can’t figure out with an algorithm.”
“True,” Jiyong replied softly with a little chuckle. And then he waved his toothbrush at you and said, “Well, I’m gonna get ready for bed, I guess.”
You shot him a swift grin before he headed to the small en suite bathroom, and when you heard the door close behind him, you dashed to your own bag so you could change into your pajamas before he came back out.
You had no idea what time it was, and at this point, you were too afraid to look. You only knew you’d been lying in bed -- in Mrs. Elderberry’s guest bed in Mrs. Elderberry’s house in the middle of nowhere -- for a very long time, and you hadn’t been able to manage one wink of sleep.
And... by the sounds of it. Jiyong hadn’t been able to, either. He had been fairly quiet and still so far, but just a few moments ago, you heard the telltale signs of tossing and turning.
Since you were awake... and since you now knew he was awake... you would feel kind of awkward if you didn’t say anything.
“Jiyong,” you whispered hesitantly into the darkness of the room.
“Hmm?”
“Okay, just making sure you were actually awake.”
“Yeah,” he sighed. “Can’t sleep. You?”
“Nope.”
He moved around again, and this time, you saw his silhouette move into a sitting position and turn to fluff the pillow you’d given him.
“You can’t sleep because... you’re too uncomfortable?” you guessed. Your heart began to beat just a bit quicker because you knew what you were going to follow-up with if he said ‘yes.’
“...I mean, yeah. It’s the floor.”
And here we go.
“Just come up here. The bed is big enough.”
Unsurprisingly, Jiyong didn’t answer right away. He waited a couple of moments before replying with a very wary, “...Are you sure?”
“Yes, I’m sure right now, but if you wait too long, I’ll probably change my mind.”
You immediately heard some rustling, and not even ten seconds later, the side of the bed next to you dipped down.
“I don’t know if it’ll help much,” you whispered, keeping your eyes glued on the ceiling. “Because I’m still awake, but it’s gotta be better than the floor.”
Jiyong let out a satisfied sigh, and for some reason, the sound of it made a tiny smile appear at the corners of your lips.
“Much better,” he murmured. “Thanks.”
You simply hummed in response, and then the room went quiet again.
That is, until you found yourself asking something which had been on your mind for... well, however long ago it was that he’d said this.
“Why did you not want to look stupid in front of me?” you asked with an almost undetectable waver in your voice -- almost. It was definitely there because you were definitely nervous, both to have him lying right beside you and to hear his answer.
“You just couldn’t let it go, huh?” Jiyong chuckled. You could tell he turned over, and when he spoke next, his voice was more clear -- he had turned over to face you. “I didn’t want to look stupid in front of you because I think you’re cool.”
A laugh burst from your chest, and you immediately brought a hand up to cover your mouth, not wanting to wake your gracious hostess. “I’m sorry, what?” you choked out. “Me? Cool? I am not cool.”
“You are to me.”
“But... I’m a technology, video game nerd. It’s a well-known fact that you are the cool one.” You glanced over at him, but only briefly. Your heart was racing enough as it was; looking at him would only make it worse.
“You’re authentic,” he replied. “You’re genuine. You don’t care what other people think. You’re 100% totally yourself, and to me... that’s cool.”
Your forehead had started wrinkling as he’d started answering you, and the wrinkles had only gotten deeper as he’d kept talking.
“I... I had... no idea you thought that,” you said with a breathless laugh of disbelief. “Why didn’t you ever tell me before?”
“Because I just started thinking you were cool earlier today,” he answered without missing a beat.
“Shut up,” you chuckled, reaching out absently with your hand and swatting his shoulder -- or, at least, you thought it was his shoulder. You still weren’t facing or looking at him.
“No, in all seriousness... I just... didn’t think you’d care.”
And you could definitely understand why he would’ve thought that. Because you’d thought the same thing.
You finally turned your head to the side, meeting his gaze through the darkness. “I thought the same thing about you. I thought you were way too cool for me, and there was no way you’d ever want to be friends with a geek like me.”
“So, we both were idiots then, huh? Me more than you, of course.”
Your brow knit together in confusion. “Why’s that?”
“Because I’m a guy.”
“Oh,” you chuckled, your lips curving into a smile. “Well, yeah. I can agree with that.”
“So... are we friends now?” he asked -- and you could’ve sworn you heard a hopeful lilt in his tone.
“Yeah, I guess. And from one friend to another? A good leader isn’t the one who has all the right answers. A good leader is the one who recognizes the right answer when he hears it.”
“Wow, okay, how many times do I have to admit that you were right about being lost?”
“As many times as it takes me to forget.”
“So... for the rest of my life, then.”
...Why did the thought of knowing Jiyong for the rest of his life make your heart flutter? Just this afternoon, this thought would have almost disgusted you -- it definitely would’ve made you uncomfortable.
But now you were realizing -- pretty quickly -- that he wasn’t exactly who you thought he was. He was certainly still arrogant and stubborn, but he was also generous (letting you have the bed), determined (willing to do whatever it took to let Mrs. Elderberry give you her guest room), and... actually pretty sweet.
“Okay, my turn -- from one friend to another.”
His words interrupted your thoughts, but you were kind of glad about that. You didn’t really need to be thinking about how sweet Jiyong was when he was lying right next to you in bed.
“Go for it,” you murmured.
“...Would it be super weird if we cuddled?”
“Wha --!” you choked.
“I need something to cuddle when I sleep! That’s why I couldn’t sleep on the floor! And unless you want to give me your pillow...”
You immediately lifted your head, grabbed your pillow out from under you, and threw it over at him. There was no way you were going to cuddle with him. That was a very bad idea.
...Mainly because you were worried it wasn’t a bad idea at all.
One Year Later
You knew Jiyong was tired when he fell asleep before you.
That man could labor away in his studio basically all night, so when he was already in bed when you got home from work?
Granted, you had been clocking some late hours at work the past few days. Your team had been busy with a new project, and you’d even had to bring your work laptop home with you tonight to finish things up.
But, still. When you’d popped your head into your shared bedroom and seen with your own eyes that Jiyong was fast asleep, you knew he had been working himself too hard for too long.
...Which didn’t stop you from bringing your laptop with you to bed and getting your own work done, though. You had a deadline to meet!
You tried to get into bed as stealthily as possible, not wanting to wake your boyfriend up from his much-needed rest, but as soon as you opened up your laptop, Jiyong managed to throw the pillow he’d been cuddling over his shoulder and onto the floor. He scooted closer to you and snaked his arm around your waist, his leg over yours, resting his head on your arm as you sat up next to him.
“Ji, I have some more work to do,” you chuckled, trying to shrug him off -- to no avail.
“You can still work,” he muttered, his words slurred with sleep. “I need cuddle.”
“No, you need sleep.”
“Mm mm. Cuddle. You.” He nuzzled your arm, pressing his cheek into the crook of your elbow before turning his head and brushing his lips gently over your skin. “I tried to wait up for you.”
“I know, I’m sorry,” you frowned. “We’re almost done with this project.”
“Almost?”
You hummed positively, glancing down at him with a soft, adoring grin.
“And when you’re done --”
“We’ll celebrate, for sure.”
“By getting married?”
Your head jerked back with surprise, and even though his eyes were closed, you stared down at him. “...Excuse me? Since when are we getting married?” Because this was the first you’d heard of it!
“Mrs. Elderberry,” you laughed. “Oh, I’d almost forgotten about her.”
“How could you forget? That’s where we got engaged,” he sighed.
“Oh, it is? So, we’ve been engaged this whole time?”
Jiyong nodded, his hair scratching your skin slightly and causing shivers down your spine.
“Then I just have one question,” you said with a smirk.
“Hmm?”
You pulled your left arm out from his embrace, sticking your hand palm-down in front of his face and wiggling your fingers. “Where’s my ring?”
You were expecting him to reply that it was getting resized -- the excuse you’d given Mrs. Elderberry as to why your ring finger was... well, ringless.
But, to your complete and utter shock, Jiyong dug one hand underneath your pillow, emerging with the most beautiful, the most sparkly, the most perfect ring you’d ever seen in your entire life.

When you finally lifted your head to look at him, you never thought you’d see the look that was flashing in his eyes. He was looking at you with awe, and fear, and desire. Before you could say anything else, he was grasping you with both hands and pulling you in to him. His lips crashed on yours with a hungry need, the forcefulness of his want taking your breath away. Cradling your head, he laid you back onto the bed, covering your body with his own. His hands worked hurriedly to grab the hem of your shirt, tearing it from top to bottom. A yelp escaped your lips into the kiss, not from fear but from excitement. Your hands reached for his hair, twisting the chocolate locks around your fingers as you pulled him deeper into the kiss. His fingers made nimble work of removing your panties, ripping them as he had done to the shirt. Once your naked body was on full display beneath him, he paused long enough to take the visage in. Your chest was heaving, breaths ragged from the kiss. Your pulse twitched beneath flesh at your neck, right in the spot that drove him crazy. Your lips were pink and full from kissing him, eyes half-closed yet still full of lust and want. Your velvet soft skin was glowing beneath him, flushed pink, and warmth radiating between the two of you. He wanted to devour your body. He wanted to let all his pain and hurt out. He wanted to feel your arms around him, pulling him close, pulling him deep within you. He no longer wanted to hold back with her, but completely release his need.
You knew he needed a release, knew that giving yourself completely to him in this moment was what he wanted, what he needed. You weren’t afraid of how rough he might be, you just wanted him to know that you were going to be there for him, no matter what. You became loss in the way he touched you, his grip tight on your thigh as he laid your leg over his shoulder. You welcomed him, when with a swift thrust, he was fully hilted within your waiting core. When each thrust came hard and fast, you lifted your hips to meet them, every single one. When he bit down on flesh as he groaned out your name, you let the pain wash over you. As he grabbed your wrists to hold them over your head, you let him take control of your body. You withheld your orgasm, allowing him to be pleased only. As his eyes went wild with lust, you met and held his gaze. As his hips faltered their rhythm, you wrapped your legs around his waist, keeping him buried deep as he met his release. When you felt hot tears fall off his face, you pulled him close, embracing him with a tenderness he needed. You ran fingers through his sweat soaked hair as sobs racked his body, his head coming to rest on your breast. You held him until his breathing slowed and his heartbeat returned to normal. You pulled the blanket over your bodies as you let him sleep in your arms, not caring who found you together in the morning. You held him close for the rest of the night, knowing you were in too deep to lose him now, to lose any of them. You were in love with him, and it didn’t phase you in the slightest.
When your eyes opened, dawn was just beginning to break outside his window. Your body was weighed down by his arm that was draped across your waist. His head was still resting on your chest, the warmth of his steady breathing fanning against your skin. You had learned so much last night about the man that laid beside you. To hear the pain in his voice as he told you the story of his brother’s and sister-in-law’s death tore at your heart. The difference in how he made love last night was far from the tender, caring man from the first time. As if to remind you of what they had done, your muscles ached and felt like you had been hit with by a truck. You did not regret letting him use you the way he did, as long as he found some kind of release from the pent up emotions he harbored deep within his soul. you had an inkling that he would hate himself for treating you so rough, so you made a silent vow to assure him that you were fully in control of your decisions and actions. Trying to wiggle your arm from under his head, you moved slowly, making sure he didn’t stir. When you finally stood, your legs nearly gave way and you had to stand still in order to regain stability. Padding across the floor, you went to his bathroom. Once your bladder was empty, you stopped at the sink to wash your face. Looking in the mirror, you examined your bare body. There were more marks left by his mouth. Peering downwards, you found fingertip bruises along your wrists, upper arms, and along your hips. You couldn’t recall feeling that much pressure from his hands, but to you, they were worth it. You ran fingers across each mark, remembering how his touch felt, how he set a proverbial fire somewhere hidden far inside your very core.
When you looked back up into the mirror, your gaze was met by his eyes watching you. There was hurt, fear, and pain mixed in his expression. You turned towards him, making slow calculated steps in his direction. His muscles tensed as you neared him.
“I’m sorry Y/N, I..”
“Ji-yong, you have nothing to be sorry for. I wanted to be with you like that. I wanted you to feel like you didn’t have to hold back or hide anything from me. You needed to have that release, and I am glad that I was the one to be with you.”
“But, I hurt you. Look at those bruises.”
“Please, just stop it right now. You did not hurt me. These bruises? They are a reminder of what we shared, a reminder of letting things go, giving in to a primordial instinct. They are not painful, not physically. They reflect your pain, yes, but the pain that you are trying to let go of. I will carry these, so you don’t have to carry any more hurt.”
“Dammit Y/N, I don’t want to leave any mark on you that was caused by my own pain! If I am to leave a mark on you, I want it to be from love.” as the words left his lips, he froze. Realization flashed across his face, they both saw it.
“What are you saying Ji?” you held his eyes with your own, waiting for him to speak.
“I think… I think I am saying that, possibly, maybe, I… I think I am falling for you, and hard. It scares the hell out of me. I haven’t loved a woman in so long, I almost forgot what it feels like. It scares me that you could up and walk out that door at any minute and never look back. It eats me up inside when I see how those two kids look to you for comfort and love. And you give it to them freely and willingly, and I find myself wanting the same thing from you. I can’t explain it, I probably sound crazy right now. But, I look at you, like I am at this moment, and I feel a deep stirring in my chest that I can’t push away. I don’t ever want to hurt you, but I am afraid that I will, that I’ll break your heart or push you away.” Tears were forming behind his lids, threatening to spill over at any given moment.
“Ji, what if I told you that I was in love with you? Would that make me sound crazy too? What if I told you that I am willing to risk losing you, losing those precious kids, all for the sake of loving you? I know you will never purposely hurt me, you would never set out to break my heart. But, there is always that chance that one of us may hurt the other. Are you willing to take that risk with me? Are you at least willing to see what we can have, together? Because I want to. I want to share my heart and love with you and them. I want to be the one, any of you can come to for comfort, understanding, and love.”
“You… You said you love me?”
“Is that the only thing you heard?”, you were smiling at him, head tilted slightly as you watched his expressions change from fear to shock and then to peace.
“I think I caught other parts, too. You really love me? Love us? Don’t kid around here Y/N.”
“I’m not playing Ji-yong. Yes I love those kids, I love the staff here, but most importantly, I love you Mr. Kwon Ji-yong, and I am not afraid to say it or show it any more.”
He reached you in one long stride, his hands reaching to cup your face in his hands. Leaning down, he pressed his lips gently to yours. One hand reached for your waist, pulling you flush against his still naked body. There were no signs of sexual need or desire in this kiss. It was a gentle knowing kiss. A kiss that conveyed all feelings, feelings you two had so desperately tried to keep at bay. Your arms wrapped around his neck, pulling him closer to you. The lingering aroma of sweat, sex, and musk encircled you both. Breaking the kiss as lungs ached for air, he pressed his forehead to yours. Eyes closed, he let tears fall freely, no longer ashamed of looking vulnerable. He couldn’t remember the last time he cried so much and so freely, didn’t think he even cried after his brother died. It felt good, felt freeing, to let everything out. He could trust you with his heart, wanted to trust you with everything he had and everything he was.
Youtook hold of his hand, turning him back to the bedroom. Without speaking, you crawled up and pulled him in beside you. He pulled your body against his, tucking his arms snug around your small frame. He nuzzled his nose in your hair, drinking in the scent of hibiscus and cherry blossom that still clung to you. Leaning his head up, he planted a kiss to your temple.
“I love you” he whispered in her ear.
“I love you too, Ji, more than you know.” you said back, a lazy smile spreading as you drifted off to sleep.
[ You are my everything. My moonlight, my milkyway, my everything. ]
The words, appearing on Jiyong’s wrist in the middle of a concert, stayed there even after he walked off the stage and rested in an empty room, observing lazily the messy handwriting, the one he was so used to by now. He leaned against the backrest of a sofa, so tired that he was surprised he didn’t fall asleep on spot just yet. Taking a pen off a nearby table, he extended his wrist to write.
[ This is the most cliche thing you’ve ever wrote. ]
The reply came soon after.
[ I was feeling sentimental. I could always draw a dick on my face in the middle of your concert, Jiyonie. ]
[ What did I do to deserve a pain in the ass like you? ]
[ Maybe saved the world in your previous life? Because your current one would be boring as hell without me. ]
Against himself, he smiled lightly. But reaching to write another reply, his head unwittingly tilted on his side, and his breath slowed down as the idol slowly drifted off to sleep.
The next message would be washed off before he’d manage to wake up and read it. It only said,
(Can be read stand-alone or as a continuation of Jiyong’s ‘Boyfriend Material’ fics)
“Tonight?”
“Yes - tonight Jiyong. Tonight is our anniversary!”
You were currently panicking, trying to hail a cab while talking to your husband who was in hair and makeup across town.
“How the heck did we both forget it?”
“I’m sure I’ve got it on my calendar, babe!”
“Well that doesn’t help if you have your manager check your calendar.”
“This isn’t just on me - you’ve been out of the country for two weeks for work!”
You heard someone call his name in the background on the phone while a cab pulled up in front of you.
“Okay I’ll give you that one. I just got a cab so I’m on my way. Make sure to give the guards my name. I’ll text your manager once I’m there.”
“Okay. I love you and I’ll see you soon!”
As you sat in the cab, you started scrolling through local restaurants to see where you might be able to get a last minute reservation with a private room. You texted a few options to Jiyong and were about to close your eyes for a second, when you spotted a flower stand.
“Wait! Pull over real quick!”
You popped out and bought a bouquet of bright orange annuals. Jiyong had just dyed his hair orange for this comeback and you were obsessed with it. He rocks any hair style, although you occasionally like to tease him about his Fantastic Baby MV hair. But you had taken to threatening him if he got rid of the orange too soon, so you took every opportunity to remind him how much you loved it.
Back in the car, you carefully set the flowers to the side. You had about a forty minute ride to the studio and your jetlag was starting to rear its head.
Today marked three years since you and Jiyong had gotten married, but you had been together for much longer. You’d fought, you’d survived his enlistment, you’d befriended his fans, and you’d even transplanted yourself to another country for him.
He was a work-a-holic just like you, traveling for months sometimes, but he never failed to make you smile or laugh. Jiyong had a knack for reminding you that, even though there is always something that needs to be done, there’s beauty in being still. (His words, not yours - he was a lyricist after all).
Sometimes your schedules got the better of you though, and this was one of those times. You’d never missed such a big thing as an anniversary though, so you were both doing all you could to clear your evenings. You had even switched your flight to a red-eye just so you could get back in time.
When you pulled up to the studio, you paid your driver and grabbed your suitcase from the trunk as your pressed send on a text.
The manager met you at the gate and you easily were allowed through.
“Jiyong and Seunghyun are on stand-by in the dressing room. They’ll go on in an hour and then they just have to wait around for a few more hours before he is all yours.”
“Thank you so much for clearing his evening. I can’t believe we literally forgot our own anniversary. It wasn’t until I started seeing people tagging us on instagram in things that I remembered it.”
“The two of you are always working I wasn’t even surprised when I got his panic message.”
You laughed as you pulled open the dressing room door, only to be instantly bear hugged...
...by Seunghyun?
“Y/N! You’re here! This is the best! I didn’t think you’d get to watch any of our stages!”
“Hey! Off my wife! She’s here for me!”
You felt someone pull you backwards before Jiyong wrapped his arms around your shoulders, snuggling his face into your neck.
“Happy anniversary, babe.” he whispered, making your smile grow.
You turned your head and pressed a kiss to his lips, that were waiting, before you said back “Happy anniversary.”
“Okay EW! You guys are too mushy!”
Jiyong raised his head and stuck his tongue out at Seunghyun before pulling away from you so he could take the flowers, then hold your hands.
“I’m really sorry I forgot, Y/N.”
Pushing his bangs back a little, not too much because his stylist would get mad, you pressed a kiss to his forehead.
“It takes two, Jiyong. It’s okay. We’re together and that’s all that matters.”
“Get a room you two!”
“In a few hours we will!” Jiyong joked back, making Seunghyun laugh and you blush as you shoved him away.
“What? It’s our anniversary and we haven’t seen each other in weeks!”
“Jiyong! Stop talking!”
“But - “
“Guys I need you on deck now.” the manager called, thankfully saving you from any more embarrassment.
Jiyong kissed you hard before following Seunghyun out the door towards the stage.
You followed after they had done their prep so you could watch from backstage as the boys played around. You would never get tired of watching them perform because they just enjoyed it so much and it always showed!
The one thing different this time? Jiyong kept throwing faces at you.
You could see fans craning their necks to see who he kept looking back at. When they finished recording, Jiyong yelled into the mic “Who wants to see Y/N?!” with no warning whatsoever.
Everyone went crazy, screaming and clapping. Your cheeks instantly flamed up and Jiyong started waving you on stage. You slowly walked up, glaring at him playfully as the fans started whistling and cheering.
“Now most of you probably already know, but today is our anniversary!”
Cue even more screams. And even redder cheeks. Jiyong threw his arm around your shoulders and pulled you into him in an effort to help you relax.
“I know I speak for both of us when I say how much we appreciate all of your love and support over the years.”
Feeling a spurt of bravery, or maybe it would be stupidity, you grabbed the mic from your husband. Everyone went super quiet, because even though you’d be around Jiyong for years, you weren’t one to speak out often.
“Thank you all. You’re not just fans to us, you are family.”
A chorus of “awwwww”s rippled through the crowds and when you turned to look at Jiyong, he had the biggest smile on his face while looking at you.
Jiyoung took back his mic and said “Isn’t she the best?!” before kissing you on the cheek and leading you off stage.
His manager was standing at the ready with keys in hand which he passed off.
“I already put your suitcase in the car, Y/N. His schedule is clear for the rest of the week, so go home and enjoy your anniversary!”
Jiyong grabbed the keys, grabbed your hand, and took off, leaving the cheering staff behind and a whining Seunghyun asking why he couldn’t come along.
In the car, you took Jiyong’s free hand and played with his fingers on your lap while he rapped along to songs on the radio quietly. You didn’t ask where the two of you were going, because you could already tell you were heading home.
You pulled in and neither of you said anything as Jiyong pulled your suitcase from the car and led you inside. Once inside, you followed him, wondering why he was being so quiet.
He kept quiet until the two of you were out on your balcony, cuddled up under a blanket with glasses of wine and some music in the background.
Finally, Jiyong said something.
“I love you. After all this time, I love you. After even more time, I’ll still love you. The fact that my heart is yours will never change.”
You don’t know what you had expected him to say after all that silence, but even if that wasn’t it, you weren’t surprised.
You set your wine glass down and turned so you were facing him head on. Placing both your hands on either side of his face, you slowly lowered your forehead to touch his, and your nose was barely brushing the tip of his own.
Jiyong’s eyes closed slowly and his lips curled up in a soft smile, but you didn’t move. You just watched him until his eyes popped back open, landing on yours.
You weren’t as good with words as he was, but you always made sure to get your feelings across somehow. With all of Jiyong’s attention on you, you pressed a soft kiss to his lips, holding his eyes the whole time and loving seeing your own emotions reflected in them.
When you pulled back, Jiyong tried to follow your lips, so you used your hands to hold him back for a second.
“I love you too, Jiyong. Always have, always will.”
And with that he set down his own wine glass, because his hands were itching to hold onto you instead.
