Eel goes on to describe Flowers For Algernon as an analogy for him splitting from his Plastic Man persona (and how being Eel again was 100% a BAD thing and he was acutely aware of that), but the first thing that came to my mind was the circus from We're Back, where the dinosaurs are reverted to vicious and mindless by the ringmaster, but the kids giving them hugs turns them back into gentle goofs. (Which is one of my favorite tropes in human history. You'll never rip it out off my hands.)
