I have really bad social anxiety, (preventing me from going to school & seeing friends) I have been invited to my friends party and its at a club. I am so terrified and don't think I can go. But I don't want to let her down, as I haven't seen her in months & I want to be there for her birthday. She knows I've had anxiety but I still don't know how to tell her that I can't go. I'm scared she'll be angry and/or disappointed with me for not being able to go. Please tag as jfm16
Hey there, Lovely.
I'm sorry to hear that you're having so much anxiety about your friend's party. I know /exactly/ how you feel. I often find myself cancelling plans with friends when they involve going out into large crowds. However, since your friend knows about your anxiety, it will be easier to explain to her why you can't come. (Not that that would make you feel less anxious, but that she will probably be quicker to understand.)
She might be a little disappointed that you wan't be attending her party, but try suggesting an alternative. Maybe you won't be at her party, but you could pick another day when you are both free and decide to do something really special with just the two of you. That way she'll know that you are still there for her, your anxiety can be eased, and you two will still get to celebrate her birthday together.
Tips for speaking with your friend:1) Arrange a time to talk without distractions. 2) Write down what you want to say first, so that you don’t blank of forget anything.3) Tell her. Beating around the bush will accomplish nothing/ possibly confuse her. Do your best to explain how you feel as you have done here, to me.
Best of luck, Lovely.
