Job Search Scams
So if you’re looking for a job through online job application sites, please be careful about the messages you receive!
So after applying through indeed and ziprecruiter and linkedin, ive gotten a few texts from vague companies. Usually they pose as real companies. I’ve gotten posers from “Augusta Capital Enterprises” based in New Zealand. And “The CGI Group” based in well... not my location (Washington?). I’ve only applied to jobs around my area, so getting callbacks from jobs that are overseas? in different states? hmmm
Also please be careful cus they usually are super vague and too good to be true. So like they’ll offer an online position where they pay for training, equipment (thought a third party seller or something so u send money directly to them), and then like a $25 per hour wage after training. And true, there are some real jobs like this (maybe). But another thing.. is that I’m not qualified for these kinds of jobs. No offense but ah... well who’s gonna hire a part time student without a degree at such a high wage just to do administrative work for a company overseas online....
But some are also really really convincing!! they target people who are desperate and hoping for all hope of a miracle opportunity and they pose as that!!! They’ll pose as your dream job. So the Augusta group that contacted me said they would provide me with a company credit with which I would purchase the equipment to be delivered to my place and set up my at home office. and that’s a red flag. that “I” would be purchasing. that usually means they’ll send fake money that will bounce right out of ur account after u made the purchases, leaving u with a negative balance!
Also carefully read the emails they’re emailing u from! the official email for Augusta is @augusta.co.nz and the one they contacted me through was @augustas.co.nz ! there’s an added s . So keep an eye out for that
Also, no matter how professional the email, if there’s no address and phone to contact the company through on the ends of the emails, it’s usually not legit. They don’t want u actually calling the company to confirm things. Always confirm!
Also they usually do online interviews where they demand prompt responses so u respond quickly when they want u to use their “credit”. Make sure you triple check the places you’ve applied to to see if you’ve actually applied to the place! I know it’ll be hard when u have so many applications u submitted, but just check! if you didnt apply, no place is gonna seek u out of the blue unless u previously held a high position at ur former workplace. If you were working entry level like me, they don’t really have much to seek u out on in ur resume to want u so badly to work at a overseas or out of state company online... it would just be easier for a real company to hire someone nearby.
Also, in the online interview (usually on hangouts for some reason), they pose as like a CEO or high individual u can find by googling and tbh these people arent going to be the ones doing the hiring like that.
Stay safe out there!! Don’t get scammed!! It Sucks and I don’t want yall peeps losing hundreds maybe thousands of dollars cus some assholes wanted to take advantage of already desperate people!!!!
