On the 9th March 2025, S03E06 of The Newsreader - The Fall - aired traditionally on the ABC, concluding the show one year ago this evening 💙
It’s always darkest before the dawn, and as the Berlin Wall collapsed, the public image and control of some Australian media personalities went through a great fall too, leading to a need to find one’s power and truth from within.
Dale Jennings was becoming a shell of who he once was. His obsession with audience feedback and shaping himself into who they wanted him to be was all consuming, to the point where he didn’t know who he was anymore.
But even in all his efforts to change and shape himself, he was the subject of mockery; his own team laughing at his comedy impressionist, and nothing he could do pleased both his audience and his managers.
His breakdown on live television seemed a surprise to the audience, but for those who worked with him, it was evidence that things needed to change at News At Six, and those who had been previously disempowered by Lindsay’s iron fist found that they had the power to “do something” all along.
Even at Public Eye, there was a need for change to take place too. Noelene had to have a tough conversation with Helen, reminding Helen that she had a life outside of the workplace. Helen needed to recognise the work-life balance that her team required, if she was to lead her team with fairness and understanding.
Helen realised too that she would not stand for Bill’s punitive treatment of her after she had turned his advances down, and in that board room, she stood for the team she believed in, who would take Public Eye into a new decade and beyond.
The best thing we can do is be true and authentic to ourselves, and to surround ourselves with individuals who also share these values too. The work and opportunities which complement who we are will come to us in due time, maybe even when tomorrow comes.
