As I had mentioned, I bought a book highly recommended by the good peoples of the internet. Having read it a few times over, I highly recommend it myself. It’s simply written, by an oldish individual who has common sense, and it basically breaks down a very complex topic into easy to digest chunks. That’s rare, so thank you Joe Friel! It even has pictures, bonus!
In every piece of literature ever written discussing sports and food, the word “fuel” replaces “food” often.
The tiny island nation I grew up on is Tony Bourdain’s favorite destination. He’s opening a massive food market some time in 2017 based on the culinary delights he discovered there. Enjoying an awesome meal is the #1 sporting event, swimming doesn’t even register as a close 2nd. You can take the girl out of the country but…
The very concept that I’ll have to eat only to provide the appropriate fueling needs for my “engine” teetered on being the deal breaker. I like my fried chicken and I have no problem admitting that. So I read through those chapters and looked up a bunch of other foods/sports related literature.
You can imagine my relief when I realized I can keep my fried chicken!
There’s a lot of conflicting info out there when it comes to nutrition. Here’s another guy you should look up on this topic, his name is Michael Pollan. He’s also written a lot of books full of common sense. He breaks it down into 7 words…“Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.” To that I’d like to add…eat mostly what Mother Nature made, not what Man made. Coz as we all know, Mother knows best!
So it’s a compromise of sorts. I’m not going pro-athlete so I don’t have to eat hardcore like one. I do have to follow the timing of when and what to eat right before a workout. If I don’t, bad things happen.
I’ll tell you this, in the very beginning, as my body was adjusting to the new regiment and “fuel”, it took less than 1 drink to floor me. That was an adjustment and the 1st sucky thing to happen. Nowadays, things are back to normal. You just have to stick with it. Yes I’m going to keep repeating that.
