Two of the biggest gateways to horror in the '80s are '90s are joining forces as Goosebumps and Fear Street writer R.L. Stine will author books based on Topps’ gross-out trading cards, Garbage Pail Kids.
EW reports that Stein has signed a deal with Abrams’ Children’s Books to publish three middle-grade books. Welcome to Smellville will kick off the line on October 6.
In Stine’s vision, the Garbage Pail Kids are gross and weird and strange, but they’re not bad kids — they just don’t know any better. Welcome to Smellville introduces Adam Bomb, Brainy Janie, Junkfood John, and Nervous Rex as they get into mischief, battling bullies and their archenemies, the Perfects.
The books will feature cover art by Joe Simko and interior illustrations by Jeff Zapata, both Garbage Pail Kids regulars, and will be packaged with four exclusive sticker cards. The first card - R.L. Slime - can be seen below.
R.L. Stine had the following to say:
The Garbage Pail Kids are ghastly, loud, messy, out of control... out of their minds. In other words, MY kind of kids! I’m hoping to create a book series that captures all the loopy slapstick fun of these uniquely awful characters, to get all middle-grade kids reading - and laughing.
The Op Games in association with Hasbro will release a Garbage Pail Kids edition of Monopoly this spring. The classic board game gets a makeover courtesy of the irreverent characters from Topps’ 1980s trading card series.
Garbage Pail Kids artist Joe Simko painted the box art. Game tokens include zit goo tube, fish bones, melting eyeball, overflowing trash can, guillotine, and swirly dog poop.
The game also includes the playing board, 28 Title Deed cards, 16 Never Had a Chance cards, 16 Community Chester cards, 32 garbage can houses, 12 dumpster hotels, custom monopoly money, two dice, and rules.
“As long-time fans of Garbage Pail Kids, we are excited that other fans of this pop-culture classic will be able to immerse themselves in, and enjoy, the iconic tabletop Monopoly game play experience,” says Maggie Matthews (aka Haggy Maggie in Garbage Pail Kids-speak), The Op’s SVP of Licensing.
“When Topps first published the Garbage Pail Kids cards and stickers in the 80’s and 90’s, it spawned a worldwide collecting phenomenon,” says Ira Friedman (aka IncrudibleIra), Topps VP of Global Licensing. “Today, many of those young fans are nostalgically reliving childhood memories and reconnecting with the brand. They’re going to get a kick out of this bold mashup between GPK and Monopoly.”
