Penny Dreadful (2014 — 2016), S2E10
John Clare, “Autumn”
Summer Tints How sweet I've wander'd bosom-deep in grain, When Summer's mellowing pencil sweeps his shade Of ripening tinges o'er the checquer'd plain: Light tawny oat-lands with a yellow blade; And bearded corn, like armies on parade; Beans lightly scorch'd, that still preserve their green; And nodding lands of wheat in bleachy brown; And streaking banks, where many a maid and clown Contrast a sweetness to the rural scene,-- Forming the little haycocks up and down: While o'er the face of nature softly swept The ling'ring wind, mixing the brown and green So sweet, that shepherds from their bowers have crept, And stood delighted musing o'er the scene. by John Clare

Ranking versions of Frankenstein's Creature in ascending order of hotness
Frankenstein and the Monster From Hell:
I know what they were trying to do here but. Yuck. There were also much sexier things happening in this movie which had nothing to do with the creature such as the scene where Frankenstein clamps down on an artery with his teeth. -5/10
Van Helsing:
Looks bad. This is actually one of the better images because it looks even worse under the cloak. This movie had a budget of 160 million USD and they should have been able to do better than this. -4/10
Frankenstein Must be Destroyed:
This is just a regular guy. Also loses points for having his wife be unable to accept him like this even though the body he was in before was genuinely less attractive. -1/10
The Revenge of Frankenstein:
Again, just a regular guy. They got slightly more interesting with this one, though, so I’m ranking it a half point higher. -0.5/10
Evil of Frankenstein:
No effort went into this. This is just the ripoff version of the 1931 creature. Zero effort, so zero points 0/10
Frankenstein (1931):
Wrecked the perception of Frankenstein’s creature for nearly a century, which makes it inherently unsexy. However I will add one point for the shot where he hits the Insta baddie pose in his Demonias. 3/10
Curse of Frankenstein:
Christopher Lee gave this character some excellent pathos. Unfortunately this is also a hotness ranking so I can’t give him higher than 4/10 because they were too good at making him look kind of disgusting
1983 illustration:
Mostly book-accurate and the art style is great but the lack of nose is not book accurate and while I don’t object to noselessness in all cases (I’m a fan of the book Phantom of the Opera, after all), it just doesn’t look quite right to me. 6/10
Penny Dreadful:
Fairly book-accurate, and I really like the Lichtenburg figure scars. They also gave him an interest in literature and poetry, but as much as he’s a sweetie, they didn’t always do a great job of hiding the way the fake scars stick onto the actor’s face. 7/10
Frankenstein Created Woman:
Gains points for being a bigender tragic revenge fantasy, loses points because this is just a hot woman. Evens out at 7.5/10
Revenge of Frankenstein, Dr Franck:
Perfect ending to this movie, and also the moment when Frankenstein himself becomes the creature. Cushing always gave 110% to his Frankenstein roles and this one was no exception. He’s leaving me on read and I’m texting him anyway. 8/10
The Bride of Frankenstein:
They cast the same actress to play Mary Shelly as the Bride. What a choice. I love it. The actress made some great choices in her physicality and I like the under-jaw scars. 9/10
Frankenstein (2004):
Almost entirely book-accurate and the actor understood the assignment. Costume design was also excellent, and they made alterations to it as he went down a steadily more tragic path. My darling bookworm goth forest prince 10/10
Frankenstein (2025):
I’m blown away by just how much they managed to fit into this. Not entirely book-accurate, but the touching points to the book are all in there (clearly designed to be beautiful, flowing dark hair) along with nods to other past creature designs like Curse of Frankenstein with the single dark eye. They made him look like an anatomy model and like a stained-glass window and like Bartholomew the flayed saint. They gave him skull-like eye sockets and scars by his mouth like the jawbone of a skull and a single streak of grey hair firstly because he was made from multiple people and secondly because they thought it would look cool. They made the scars look like access points for Victor putting him together. They gave him the side wound of Jesus and they gave him a yellowed patch of skin over his heart to represent a heart of gold. They had the scars on his face mimic the cracks of his creator’s Red Angel. All this and yet the design doesn’t feel too crowded, it just comes together into a whole. My darling bookworm goth forest prince remix. 12/10
