📽 1935: The Woman in Red  (drama) starring Barbara Stanwyck, Gene Raymond, Genevieve Tobin, John Eldredge and Philip Reed

• Shelby Barret (Stanwyck) is a stable hand who rides show horses for snobbish wealthy widow Mrs. Nicholas (Tobin), nicknamed Nicko. She meets Johnny Wyatt (Raymond), the destitute son of a once-wealthy Long Island family who plays polo for Nicko. Nouveau-riche Gene Fairchild (Eldredge), a horseman who rides his own entries, is in love with Shelby, while Nicko is in love with Johnny, who has curried her favour.

However, despite their efforts, Shelby and Johnny fall in love, and Nicko and Fairchild are jealous of their budding relationship. Nicko fires Shelby, which only encourages Johnny to leave her employ, and they elope to marry. Johnny brings Shelby home to Wyattville (the town named for his family) but his snobbish family does not approve of Shelby and treat her frigidly. (Warner Bros)

If any of you have read Adorning the Dark, by Andrew Peterson, or if you're the sort of person who likes to think of stories and myths as being splintered fragments of The True Story, of all tales that ring true in our hearts ringing true because they carry a Myth, a shred of Reality-- do yourself a favour and check out Epic, by John Eldredge.

It's a small book, but it does a magnificent job of rehashing the Gospel via allusions to stories.

(That description doesn't do it justice. This book forever changed how I thought of stories and storytelling, long before Adorning the Dark ever hit the presses.)

Raising the Dead (by the same author) is also wonderful. I don't necessarily agree with everything he says in there, but much of it is very good, and either way, it makes one think . . . and maybe sheds light on some things one might not have thought of before.

For all the ladies-- I highly recommend Captivating: Unveiling the Mystery of a Woman's Soul (by John Eldredge and his wife, Stasi). This book pulled cords in me that I didn't know were there to pull.

Mr. Eldredge wrote a counterpart for men called Wild at Heart. I haven't read it myself, but my dad has, and it stuck with him.
