A chat with Princess Grace on a park bench

John Godfrey, a keen fan of Princess Grace as an actress, went to Monaco hoping to catch a glimpse of her from a distance. But by a stroke of luck, he found himself speaking to her in the public gardens.

It was a beautiful morning on the French Riviera and I was on the beach at Nice, soaking up the sun and thinking about Grace Kelly, the actress who became Princess G race of Monaco.

She was in my thoughts because Monaco is just about a halfhour drive from Nice.

When she was appearing on the screen, she was my favorite film actress.

Her beauty appealed to me so much, that any film she was in. I saw several times.

Monte Carlo is a small place and I had heard that Princess Grace often goes shopping in the town.

So I was thinking that I might go into Monte Carlo and browse round on the chance that I might catch a glimpse of her.

After lunch I left for Monte Carlo, driving along the coast road and enjoying the breathtaking loveliness of the scenery. The sea is azure blue and pollution non-existent.

Soon after entering Monaco. I was walking up the cobbled steps leading to the palace, looking at the sights and the guards in their picturesque uniforms, and listening to the different languages being spoken by the tourists busy taking pictures.

Eventually. after gazing up at the Palace windows and failing to see anyone.

I strolled round the quaint, narrow, cobbled streets, looking at the delightful pavement cafes and small shops.

Near the Palace was a quiet little garden and I walked through it.

There were only two other people in the garden, a man m palace uniform, and silting on a seal about 60 yards away a woman I realised was the Princess.

My brain raced as I tried to think how to get the best out of the situation.

After all, she is a Princess and the first lady of Monaco, so protocol must be observed, but how wonderful to be able to get a closer look. Dare I speak?

Watched by a guard

I made my decision, and while ld been thinking I had been walking slowly, so now I was near the seat where she was sitting with head averted and looking out over the sea.

The guard was alert now and was watching me.

I stopped near the scat, but did not go too close. and speaking softly I asked: “I wonder if you could direct me to the Casino?”

She looked round and. gesturing to the road, said: “Follow that road down to the sea front, then turn right and go straight along the sea-front Al the end of it on the left you will find the Casino.”

Whilst she was speaking I was looking at her.

She is a truly beautiful women, every feature faultless, and I noticed her very strong, determined chin.

Out of the corner of my eye I could see the guard watching us closely.

I then asked her: “Will it take me long to walk there?”

This broke the ice because she tilled back her head and laughed and said: “I think that depends on you”.

I was so pleased the thing was going so well I didn’t mind the laugh being on ine. and was only wishing I had a camera to record the moment.

I started laughing with her and said: “I didn’t quite mean it how it sounded. I meant can I walk there in 10 to 15 minutes?”

She said: “I doubt it, perhaps 25 minutes’”

She had been very sweet and patient but I could not string this out much longer, so I smiled and said: ”Thank you very much You have been very kind. Goodbye.”

I casually strolled away and w alked out of the gardens, on to the road.

I walked on down to the sea-front, thinking I might go on to the Casino later and try my luck

I his thought did not quicken my pulse, the Princess had already done that. She had lived up to expectations, and how beautiful she was close-up.

She certainly still has my devoted admiration, even more so. now that we arc on speaking terms.
