To Live and Die in L.A. opened in limited release on 31 October 1985.

US Secret Service agent Gerald Petievich left the Service to adapt his own 1984 novel (with William Friedkin) for the screen and Friedkin was given a small budget of $6 million (about $18 million in today's value) to make the film.

William Peterson was cast to star (he had only appeared in one other feature film, a small part in 1981's Thief) and John Pankow was cast based on Peterson's recommendation. Willem Dafoe (who had appeared in 1983's The Hunger with Pankow) was cast, along with Dean Stockwell and John Turturro.

Friedkin hired Robby Müller and a small crew to shoot the film, wanting to work "fast and cheap" and the studio was dissatisfied with the finished film, especially with the ending. Friedkin shot an alternate "happier" ending, but went with the original in the final cut.

To Live and Die in L.A. received mixed reviews but was a modest success at the box office. It's reputation has improved over time and it is considered one of the better 1980s films.
