Listening to John Smoltz's broadcasts of the World Series (the Atlanta Braves finished off the Houston Astros in six games Tuesday night) reminded me that famous case of mistaken identity.
In its 1990 set of baseball cards, the Donruss company mixed up the photos of Smoltz and his teammate Tom Glavine. The real Smoltz - a Lansing native and Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher - is on the left.
As a Lansing State Journal writer at the time - and a baseball card collector - I wrote a column about the mistake, which included this comment from Smoltz's sister. "I guess Donruss wanted to combine the best looking guy (Glavine) with the best pitching statistics (Smoltz's)."
And in case you're wondering if these cards will buy me a new boat ... you can buy them for a few bucks each on eBay. I guess there were too many made to make them valuable.
