@harleythegnarly this is correct! it was the 1949 all star game at ebbets field, home of the brooklyn dodgers. fun fact: joe dimaggio was not originally selected for the team. he was a replacement for fellow yankees outfielder tommy henrich due to henrich’s nagging knee injuries. had henrich not been injured, 1949 would have been the only year during joe’s career dom made an all-star team without joe.

jackie robinson speaks before the house un-american activities committee, 1949. part of robinson’s testimony went as follows:
the white public should start toward real understanding by appreciating that every single negro who is worth his salt is going to resent any kind of slurs and discrimination because of his race, and he is going to use every bit of intelligence such as he has to stop it.
a letter jackie robinson sent to dock ellis, 1971. it reads:
I read your comments in our paper the past few days and wanted you to know how much I appreciate your courage and honesty. In my opinion progress for today’s players will only come from this kind of dedication. I am sure also you know some of the possible consequences. The news media while knowing full well you are right and honest will use every means to get back at you. Blacks should not protest, as you are, even though they know you are right. Honors that should be yours will bypass you and the pressures will be great. When I met you, I was left with the feeling that self-respect was very important. There will be times when you ask yourself if it’s worth it all. I can only say, Doc, it is and even though you will want to yield, in the long run, your own feeling about yourself will be the most important. Try not to be left alone, try to get more players to understand your views and you will find great support. You have made a real contribution. I surely hope your great ability continues. That ability will determine your success of your dedication and honesty. I again appreciate what you are doing.
