New School Seahawks Are The Anti-Dolphins

Reading excerpts of the “worst stuff” from the Wells Report last week was pretty terrible.  Lowlights included: Miami Dolphins players fining Martin for “being a pussy,” calling Martin a “stinky Pakastani,” making jokes about shooting black people, repeatedly calling “Player A” a “faggot,” and taunting an Asian-American trainer on the anniversary of Pearl Harbor.  Classy right? In fairness to the NFL, the Dolphins locker room appears to be the extreme.  Most observers have not personally witnessed NFL locker room culture, and beat writers can only convey so much.   However, fans, writers, coaches, and even team mascots all know that bullying, racism, sexism, and homophobia are not cool.  At the minimum, it seems the NFL is lagging behind societal ideals in these areas.  At least one player - New York Giants cornerback Terrell Thomas - is in agreement.  Speaking on Michael Sam, the first openly homosexual player to enter the NFL draft, Thomas claims, “society is ready for it, and America's ready for it, but I don't think the NFL is.” If a multi-billion dollar business such as the NFL hopes to evolve and grow, it may benefit by observing one team in particular – the team that just won the Super Bowl.  Pete Carroll and the Seahawks are doing it differently in Seattle.  Carroll has created a culture defined by positivity, support, respect, and accountability.  It is the anti-Dolphins locker room -  and, perhaps, the future of the NFL. Alyssa Roenigk did a fantastic job detailing the Seahawks new-school philosophy in a pre-season piece for ESPN magazine.  A few key findings are below. Hopefully these ideas may provide food for thought regarding the future of NFL culture. Positivity Carroll is a huge believer in positive thinking.  So is his Quarterback, Russell Wilson, who was gushing about the Seahawks positive-minded culture during training camp. "I truly believe in positive synergy, that your positive mindset gives you a more hopeful outlook, and belief that you can do something great means you will do something great. I believed that before I got here, and the crazy thing is, Coach Carroll and our football team believe it too.” Wilson doesn’t just believe positivity, he lives it.  After the team’s 30-28 playoff loss to the Falcons two seasons ago, Wilson hadn’t even left the tunnel before shifting to positive thoughts, “The Seahawks have a bright, bright future,” and “The Seahawks can be special for a long time.”  Carroll was on the same page, telling Wilson as they got on the bus: “We can win multiple Super Bowls.” Check one off the list.

Mental/Emotional Support When Carroll took the Seahawks job four years ago, he wanted to create an environment where the coaching staff truly cared about the players. "I wanted to find out if we went to the NFL and really took care of guys, really cared about each and every individual, what would happen?" During training camp, Roenigk saw the plan in action.  There were: therapists on staff; coaches regularly asking players how they were doing; blood test for struggling players (in search of amino acid deficiencies that act as important indicators for sufficient levels of dopamine and serotonin); meditation sessions; and regular yoga. As for what would happen?  Super Bowl, remember. Accountability Just because the Seahawks are allowed, and encouraged, to vent emotions doesn’t mean they aren’t held accountable for their performance.  Carroll doesn’t allow for complaining or excuse-making.  It’s the second of his three major decrees. 1. Protect the team; 2. No whining, no complaining, no excuses; 3. Be early. You’re allowed to be human and have problems; you just need to work through them.  It’s an empathetic approach that has made a believer out of assistant head coach, and former hot head, Tom Cable. "I always coached how my coaches coached me," Cable says. Working alongside Carroll, 48-year-old Cable says he finally feels as though he's working with players the right way. "If I go ballistic on a guy because he dropped his outside hand or missed an underneath stunt, who is wrong? I am.  I’m attacking his self-confidence and he's learning that if he screws up, he's going to get yelled at. If you make a mistake here, it's going to get fixed." Seahawks The Solution? Positive thinking, therapy, and meditation might sound like “wussy culture” to some.  Tell that to Seattle’s #1 ranked defense (in particular their physical secondary, nicknamed The Legion of Boom) and the hardest hitting running back in the league Marshawn Lynch (nicknamed Beast Mode). More likely, it’s helped them develop individually, and bond as a team.  It’s helped them perform their jobs more effectively.  And, you know, win the Super Bowl. I’m not saying that Carroll’s way is for everyone.  I'm not saying that every player walking through Seattle's locker room is a saint.  But there is something special going on in Seattle.  Something different from the NFL norm.  In the wake of the Wells report, and with the first homosexual player poised to enter the NFL, the league would be wise to take note.

Darren Woodson pissed me off

Like you are really on tv victim blaming Johnathan Martin because he said something to the media and not the coaches when a coach was in on the harassment? Are you fucking kidding me? He was bullied by a coach for being a smart, black man who went to an Ivy League college. And you want him to go to another coach and tell him about it? As someone who was bullied ALL the time growing up, if someone that is of some authority is bullying you you are not going to go to any other authority figure because you do not trust them. For him to say he should have handled that "in house" was some bullshit that he pulled out of his ass. After looking and reading the things that were said and done to people, you really think this was something that should have been handled "in house"? I understand sticking up for NFL players and locker rooms but come on man. You trying to turn it on him when all this has come out has made you look like an ass. They made him feel like shit because he graduated from an Ivy League school. He tried to conform and act like them, but that was not in him. Having people laugh at you for being smart sucks. Just the other day a two people very close to me laughed at me because I used the word "verbiage", and that really bothered me. It was said that because of where I am from that I should not use that word. But that is my vocabulary. It brought me back to going to an urban public school after going to a 99% white boarding school. I was made fun of because I was smart and that has always bothered me. I do not care if you talk about my looks or my clothes, but my intelligence is the one thing that I hold close to my heart. But to get back on subject, Darren Woodson should never have said he should have not said anything. That was stupid and ESPN should suspend him. What do you all think?

About Johnathon Martin Bullying Scandal

I'm seeing way to much Johnathon Martin hate. What did he do? He wasn't the only one who got bullied, and yet he shouldn't play in the NFL again?  And don't give me that it's part of the NFL culture. Any kind of bullying in any type of setting is wrong. I don't care if you play a physical sport like football, when you're teasing somebody is different than bullying somebody. It just shows that we have a lot of work to do in society if so many people are saying that Johnaton Martin was a "pussy," and he should have "sucked it up." It's sending the wrong message to everybody involved in the Scandal, and it's also showing how insensitive people are to bullying in the workplace.
