John Pilger Cause of Death - John Pilger Dies
-Who controls the past controls the future. Who controls the present controls the past. These words from George Orwell’s 1984 book preface another one, equally important. In Hidden Agendas (1998) John Pilger tackles the injustices and double standards inherent in the politics of globalisation. I met him a few decades ago at the Cheltenham Literary Festival thankful and invigorated after his brilliant piece in the Guardian where he wrote about the NATO bombing of Serbia... Pilger was also one of the rare to remark on the background of all political injustices regarding the detention of the Serbian sportsman, Novak Djokovic who was with a number of asylum seekers ‘imprisoned in the same lousy Melbourne detention ‘hotel’’ some of them for eight years. In his tweet, seen by the millions around the world Pilger said: ‘Australia issued Djokovic with his dodgy visa knowing his views on vaccination. It was a nod nod and wink typical of the political geniuses of Oz.’ I hope that Djokovic’s mistreatments by the notoriously careless immigration system of the ‘free world’ ( US & US included) will shed the light on these appallingly inhumane practices regarding not only the asylum seekers but also anyone whose ‘only crime’ is a desire to live in economically prosperous and war free country. Djokovic’s immigration drama continues but let’s not forget the rest of the humans in that ‘ welcome to Australia hotel’. Utopia
Repost/words by @nosmalltalk_: "Thought this was worth reposting today. Today is #AustraliaDay, which Australians celebrate with family gatherings, fireworks, picnics and barbecues; parades; citizenship ceremonies; and Australia Day Honours, to mark the landing of the first fleet of white invaders on Port Jackson in 1788. For aboriginal people, it is known as the #DayofMourning, #InvasionDay or #SurvivalDay. This is a video clip from a documentary called Utopia, by journalist John Pilger. It makes you wonder if Australia is the epitome of a PR success in the worse sense. It enjoys its reputation for surfing, great beaches and beer with very little awareness of its foundations. Utopia is the name of one of the poorest and most desolate areas of Australia where the local health centre for indigenous people has no running water, with corrugated iron walls. I had little to zero knowledge of the experience of indigenous people in Australia prior to watching this film. You get that white Australia exists at the expense of indigenous people's lives and land but learning the details is something else. As is seeing the suppression and complacency today about some of its most horrific crimes, in the present, not just the past. An eye-opening documentary. #australia #Sydney #aboriginal #tourism #indigenous #johnpilger #utopia #nosmalltalk #firstnations #leonardodicaprio #sosblakaustralia #australiaday #invasionday #aussie"
