Today In History John H. Johnson was without question the most important force in African-American publishing in the twentieth century and has been credited with almost single-handedly opening the commercial magazine marketplace for African Americans. For decades he entertained and educated the public with Ebony and Jet, the magazines that form the basis of the Johnson Publishing empire. Johnson was born January 19, 1918, in Arkansas City, Arkansas. There would not be a CARTER™ Magazine if it wasn’t for John H. Johnson. If we don’t step up to preserve our history, it could be erased. It’s always good to see those who have the means do what they can to help maintain their story and our story. #Repost @blackenterprise with @get_repost ・・・ Business titan @MellodyHobson and her husband, Star Wars filmmaker George Lucas, filed a court motion seeking control of the Ebony and Jet archives just weeks after the magazines’ former owner, Johnson Publishing Co. (JPC), filed for bankruptcy. According to The Wall Street Journal, the power couple is seeking to take control of the magazines’ archives, which contain thousands of historic photos and recordings of African American people, culture, and events. JPC filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy earlier this month, putting the magazines’ collection of iconic footage, chronicling more than 70 years of African American life, in jeopardy. The archives include original photos of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and his funeral, Rosa Parks, Muhammad Ali, Langston Hughes, and Maya Angelou. It also includes photos taken of Emmett Till’s 1955 funeral along with a host of images published during the civil rights movement. . . . . . #jetmagazine #ebony #blackhistory #ebonymagazine #blackexcellence #blacklivesmatter #africanamerican #blackculture #blackenterprise #mellodyhobson #georgelucas #starwars #johnsonpublishing https://www.instagram.com/bigbabarob/p/BwwXFaHhhpX/?igshid=1bvnvwnr4nh84
