Canyonlands National Park (Needles District)

August 24th, 2012 (3) Canyonlands National Park, Chesler Park, and the Joint Trail, The Needles District, Utah, USA Among the three districts of the Canyonlands NP, The Needles is my favorite. Another planet on Earth! You will find here a fantastic concentration of pinnacles, fins, domes, slot canyons and other extraordinary geological formations in a vast and remote area of hiking trails. Chesler Park is a day hike of 14 miles (23 km) well marked with cairns. Despite the adjective “strenuous” in the hiking list of the NPS site (https://www.nps.gov/cany/planyourvisit/hiking.htm#CP_JUMP_5115249), it is long but easily attainable in one day. Definitely, go to The Needles (https://www.nps.gov/cany/planyourvisit/needles.htm) to appreciate the beauty of Utah!

There’s something special about sandstone; how it curves against the ground, the way it erodes into sand-soft handholds, how it glows in the light of the setting sun. I’m from a place where rock is hard and unchanging—in the painted deserts of the Colorado Plateau the soft sandstone transforms with the wind, the rain, the light. It’s a mesmerizing landscape.
