You’re going on a journey. A journey through memory. The destination? A place and time you’ve been before. The time? When movies knew to let Hugh Jackman be a romantic lead and not just get his shirt off because he was a superhero putting his adamantium claws through someone’s torso but actually giving him a chance to be a romantic lead and sex object.

He wasn’t actually a romantic lead in SWORDFISH (though he did get knobbed off). I just love this picture of  he and his SWORDFISH costar Halle Berry.

He was a romantic lead in AUSTRALIA, though.

Thankfully the place to revisit Jackman’s romantic leading man past is Lisa Joy’s  REMINISCENCE, currently in theaters and HBO Max.

REMINISCENCE marks the feature film writing and directing debut of Joy who wrote for ABC’s PUSHING DAISIES, USA’s BURN NOTICE and is currently writing for HBO’s WESTWORLD which she co-created and co-produces with her husband Jonathan Nolan.

Unlike WESTWORLD,  REMINISCENCE is mercifully uncomplicated, less confusing and less confounding. 

With the concept of using technology to access people’s memories, it’s easy to compare the film to Joy’s brother-in-law Christopher Nolan’s film INCEPTION. However, REMINISCENCE is more in line with James Cameron and James Cocks’ STRANGE DAYS, directed by Kathryn Bigelow. In that film Ralph Fiennes plays a former cop who peddles discs with people’s memories so that other people can experience it through virtual reality. A vice he feeds into to revisit his past with this ex-girlfriend.  Angela Bassett plays his friend and moral compass. 

In REMINISCENCE Jackman plays Nick, a former vet who is now a dream merchant. The present - a time where climate change has flooded cities, including Miami where everyone has to travel by boats and tread on waterlogged streets, 

while the rich - the new land barons - have taken control of dry land. With a bleak present and no future to look forward to, people pay Nick and his business partner/friend Watts (Thandiwe Newton (the film marks the first time Thandie is credited using her birth name)  to use a device to access their favorite memories. 

Enter Mae (Rebecca Ferguson), a picture of  classic Hollywood femme fatale if there ever was one.  Mae, a chanteuse, goes to Nick for his services and before long the two end up an item. 

But when Mae disappears Nick goes on an obsessive mission to find her delving into both his memories and her past.

NO SPOILERS

Love the world building that Joy did which is so simple but inventive. In keeping with the idea that there has been a monumental change in the climate, society is now largely nocturnal with people coming out at night and inside during the day because it is too hot. So instead of classic noir films that are always cloaked in the dark, this is in the light.  

Jackman and Ferguson, who already worked together in THE GREATEST SHOWMAN, proves once again they’re a great pairing. 

And unlike THE GREATEST SHOWMAN where Rebecca Ferguson didn’t actually sing, she lends several songs to the REMINISCENCE soundtrack including a brief cover of Cigarettes after Sex’s “Nothing’s Gonna Hurt You Baby”. 

Thandiwe Newton isn’t the only WESTWORLD cast member in the film. Angela Sarafayan who plays Clementine has a small role

and the score was composed by show’s composer Ramin Djawadi.

The film also stars Daniel Wu (INTO THE BADLANDS), Cliff Curtis (FEAR OF THE WALKING DEAD) and Natalie Martinez (The I-LAND).

Also in a small role is Newton and director Ol Parker’s (MAMMA MIA 1 and 2, THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL) 16-year old daughter Nico Parker.

Nico followed her mum to HBO as she stars along Pedro Pascal in HBO’s THE LAST OF US series adaptation.

And she will be seen in her third outing of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE when MISSION IMPOSSIBLE 7 is released.
