I realize this article was written in 2001 but the author really went out of his way to say that, although plagiarism is bad, actually in Fitzgerald's case it's okay, because he created something beautiful through it! Nevermind that Scott himself took proprietorship of their shared letters and lives and took great offense she should find the same inspiration from them!

Jonathon Keats, go eat your heart out. For someone who would go on to copyright his brain two years later, you sure felt nothing of dismissing a woman --a woman you yourself cast as the victim of an abusive husband-- as the necessary sacrifice for a man's artistic ambition.

Jonathon Keats, author of the recently-released Buckminster Fuller biography, You Belong to the Universe, which has been on my to-read list since it came out, on Fuller's "world-changing" ambitions:

To me, Fuller really was one of the first people to articulate the idea that we now call “world changing.” That has become almost the house religion of techies, and has become a mission for many tech companies, most emblematically Google. What’s interesting in the case of Google is you have a comprehensivism that is superficially similar to Fuller’s. The difference is that with Google this is being done ultimately for the sake of the bottom line, for the sake of profit . It is pure delusion—and one that I believe exists within the company itself—to think that there is some other deeper motive.

This distinction between Fuller and Google is an interesting one — I've drawn comparisions between the two before, here and here. I'm also with Keats here — what drew me to Fuller was his way of thinking more than what he actually produced:

As beautiful and alluring as the artifacts are, what drew me to Fuller was the way he put ideas together. It was his comprehensive anticipatory design science—the name he gave to his practice—that to me is fascinating, necessary, and increasingly challenging in a world that has become more and more specialized.

Just getting totally absorbed in that and therefore when I came back around to him and found that much of it was made up, I realized that nevertheless, it really was crucial, crucial for how he understood himself, I believe, and certainly crucial for how anyone else ever engaged in his ideas and therefore as a starting point, how can we engage in his ideas today, but with a remove of knowing that it is a myth and being able to navigate it in that sort of level, at that level of reading him as a story.

“Jonathon Keats (born October 2, 1971) is an American conceptual artist and experimental philosopher known for creating large-scale thought experiments. (…)

Keats made his debut in 2000 at Refusalon in San Francisco, where he sat in a chair and thought for 24 hours, with a female model posing nude in the gallery.

His thoughts were sold to patrons as art, at a price determined by dividing their annual income down to the minute.

In 2002 Keats held a petition drive to pass the Law of Identity, A ≡ A, a law of logic, as statutory law in Berkeley, California.

Specifically, the proposed law stated that, "every entity shall be identical to itself."

Any entity caught being unidentical to itself was to be subject to a fine of up to one tenth of a cent.

Deemed "too weird for Berkeley" in an Oakland Tribune headline, the law did not pass. (…)
