With a combination of action, mystery, romance, and magic you can't go wrong! Ah what can I say about Dr. Percival Endicott Whyborne? He's the most awkward, intelligent, and adorable character I've ever read. Whyborne starts out as a stuttering, bookish scholar who hides away in his basement office just wanting to be left alone and do his job. This works for most of his career at the Ladysmith Museum, at least until he meets Griffin Flaherty. Griffin is a private detective and needs Whyborne's help decoding a book that he's found in one of his investigations. This book is set during a time when same sex relationships are not only frowned upon by society but are in fact illegal (early 1900's?). Not to mention falling in love with another man would probably get you accused of having some sort of devil inside of you. Needless to say Whyborne keeps a tight lid on his urges towards other men. Griffin on the other hand has no problem with subtle (or not so subtle) flirting with other men. What started out as a way to get close to a potential suspect quickly turned into a beautiful love affair. Both of these men have issues of their own but they're each caring and affectionate lovers and provide the other with a safe haven. This relationship is ultimately what drives the story. Both of these men had certain expectations of how the other was going to be. They assumed the worst of each other.
