some world building and headcannons I’ve been brainstorming for the lost empire:

The Lost Empire is actually/officially named the Maztec Empire, but the title is mostly used by the citizens and by historians/older (MUCH older) people. In the recent years of its re-introduction to the rest of the empires, many people have no idea that ‘the Lost Empire’ isn’t its actual name because it has been forgotten for so long.

The Lost Empire has multiple languages! Not just ones native to the jungle, but it also has many people from other empires and thus multiple other languages are spoken in the capital. Joey knows a Ton of languages (Nevermind that more than a few of them are so ancient they’re barely even spoken anymore).

Many many centuries ago, before the Lost Empire became Lost, Rivendell and the Maztec Empire had many many serious conflicts over multiple topics, the main one being religion.

A subset of the Maztec Empire’s people included worshippers of Exor pre-corruption. They had been taken in by the Empire after Rivendell banned the worship of the god. Rivendell’s rulers (Scott&Xornoth’s parents, young rulers at the time) were very unhappy with this, and demanded multiple times for the worshippers to be banished from all empires or killed.

This ended up in an invasion of the Maztec Empire, which resulted in almost the entirety of the royal family being decapitated and the Empire reduced to ruins. There are few people alive who still remember the invasion, many having been ‘eaten by the jungle’ (in the words of one of the elder survivors). This event caused such major unrest in the elemental spirits of the jungle that it was completely uninhabitable for centuries.

Even getting close to the border of the jungle was dangerous, given that it was known to drag people in who were never seen again. It created many horror stories and legends that continue to exist until the Lost Empire rises again, mostly in the Grimlands and surrounding area. A popular story to scare kids into behaving in Eastvale is the story of a spirit that comes out to drag misbehaving kids out of bed and into the jungle.

The Maztec Empire’s royal family consisted of the previous queen (an older woman), her four children, and her grandchildren, and multiple extended family members who all wanted to get close to the Queen. It was expected that when the time came, the matriarch would choose her successor from amongst them. However, this failed to happen due to the invasion and subsequent massacre.

The Queen’s second eldest had only one child compared to the other’s multiple, and this child was Joey. He survived the massacre only because of the jungle spirit’s intervention by turning him into a statue, not before witnessing the very brutal deaths of most of his family at the hands of Rivendell’s King.

The main religion in the Maztec Empire was the worship of several jungle spirits. Though there were thousands of spirits, the ‘main’ ones were the elemental spirits: fire, water, air, and earth. These were the most worshipped, especially in the city. Worship of other jungle spirits tended to be more prevalent in smaller villages and amongst family.

Joey woke up centuries after the invasion, within the capital’s ruins. After being found by the descendants of the surviving citizens, he began spending a long time working on rebuilding the temples and capital city. The ancient languages he had grown up with had changed a lot, but the main language of the Maztec Empire was thankfully similar enough to the one that had evolved over the centuries that he could communicate with the inhabitants. He did end up learning many of new jungle languages, as well as a few outside languages for political reasons (mainly Imperial/Mangrovian, given that it’s the most common for international relations).

He also taught the citizens the secrets of totem making, which had been lost to time alongside much of the Lost Empire’s culture and traditions.

When the other Empires caught wind of the Jungle Empire making a resurgence after all these years, Joey was sent a letter inviting him to a monthly meeting all the Empires were invited to, hosted by Lady Katherine.

In Rivendell, most if not all records of the invasion were wiped from the archives by the previous King and Queen (common Rivendell trend of erasing anything imperfect about their history). People’s memories of the event would have been mostly all that’s left, if not for Joey’s survival.

Joey’s first reactions upon seeing Scott would be ‘I hate this guy I hate this guy I hate this guy I hate this guy’ internally while trying to keep up appearances. He absolutely DESPISES Rivendell, like, 'i want to burn their empire to the ground like they did to mine' levels of hatred.

Joey's hate of Scott specifically also comes from the fact he looks very similar to his dad who decapitated all of Joey's family. While for everyone else the massacre happened a long time ago, for Joey it is still as fresh in his mind as the day it happened.

HOWEVER, he doesn't show this hatred externally as he knows the Lost Empire's position is still very unstable as a recently emerging empire. Joey adores his empire and will do anything that's necessary to keep it alive and thriving. He's convinced the only way to prevent the destruction of his home again is to make the Lost Empire the most powerful.

Joey is a gryphon! Kind of a triple hybrid too? He mainly has parrot characteristics (wings, talons), an ocelot tail and some faint insect characteristics (most notably clicking sounds he makes sometimes).

You cannot tell me Joey wasn't planning on making himself the Avatar if Xornoth hadn't appeared. So in my headcannons he is.

The Lost Empire’s population also includes several people from other empires who got Lost in the jungle and decided to stay. As Joey said in one of his videos, to find the Lost Empire you have to get Lost.

The Jungle is basically an eldritch entity. You have nefarious intentions? You’re never getting out of the jungle whoops. It used to be a lot more peaceful and less alive, but after the invasion it became a lot more hostile. It follows what Joey’s asks it to do, to an extent. It was NOT very friendly to Xornoth, they escape being trapped forever only because they could teleport.

Yes Joey knows Xornoth is a Rivendellian demon. Does he care? Not much, he mostly just wants the power and Rivendell razed to the ground :D

The Lost Empire citizens are very casual with Joey, he often plays with the younger children and takes care of them if the parents are busy.

A LOT of the Maztec Empires’ culture was lost after the invasion. Joey is working with a lot of historians and researchers to note down everything he remembers.

Totems of Undying can be overused, especially by the Deathless, which is what people who find out they can respawn are called. Overuse of totems leads to periods of dizziness, exhaustion, sickness. and other similar symptoms to magic overuse.

Totems were originally created for non-Deathless doing dangerous things, however Deathless also began using them when travelling far as it was inconvenient to lose important objects every time.

Totems were created millenium ago by one of the original Maztec Empire citizens and an Evoker. This is one of the only mentions of Pillagers and Maztecs working together in their entire history, which is why the way to make them is known by both peoples. This shared craft creates a sort of neutrality between both peoples, they won’t attack eachother unless explicitly provoked.

Joey is very prideful (and very aware/proud of it). Of himself, his people and his empire.

Lost Empire citizens are mostly hybrids: parrots, insects, ocelots, and pandas are the most common, alongside the occasional human and the occasional hybrid from another empire.

The Tigerblood Prince and Princess are distant relatives of Joey’s. Their ancestor escaped the invasion given that they were a distant relative. However, they could’ve had barely a drop of royal blood and Joey would still have made them family, if only because he really cares about them. The two were orphans living in one of the deeper villages inside the Jungle. Joey recognized a family heirloom and took them in.

Mutually toxic Jornoth my beloved <3 I love toxic yaoi. Joey despises Xornoth because they’re from Rivendell and Xornoth despises everyone because they’re corrupted <3 Sausage is also part of this evil polycule because I do not call myself jornothausage ceo for nothing.

Uncorrupted Joesage is very very awkward bc wyd when you kissed while corrupted and both dating a demon and are now not corrupted and there’s no demon but they don’t know if the other felt the same. Love them <3 the sillies

Joey does apologize to Shrub a lot after being uncorrupted. He ends up giving her a lot of free stuff like totems and cacao beans. They’re besties your honour I make the rules (can you tell I love afterlife shadow Shelby and Shulk)

Scott works together with Joey post uncorruption to restore and create records of the Invasion while he is archiving several other bits of Rivendell history that was erased (such as Xornoth). Joey is still iffy on Scott but he is willing to work with him.

Those are all I have for now but I want to make more because I have so many ideas for Empires season 1 <3 The Lost Empire is my favourite of all time istg.
