Art Weekend - Vase with Stylized Jonquil Design by Harriet Coulter Joor and Joseph Meyer
The Newcomb College's art school was formed in 1886 as part of their curriculum teaching young Southern women liberal arts. In 1895, Newcomb Pottery was formed and female students were employed to decorate pottery created by the male potters. The wares made and sold by the Pottery often depicted native Louisana imagery in blues and greens. This Jonquil vase was created in 1904 by their skilled master potter, Joseph Meyer, and decorated by one of their first students and continuing graduate, Harriet Coulter Joor.
