goncharov memes for your consideration
rewatched goncharov recently and the pure Peculiarity of joseph morelli has once again wormed itself into my brain. like we've obviously discussed the ice pick and its connections to his past, + the one murder scene of his we actually bear witness to, but i still can't get over how out of place he SHOULD be in this film??
the entirety of ice pick joe feels like someone took patrick bateman and then put him into a martin scorcese film. he's arguably a character that's completely irrelevant to the main characters and the conflict they experience, but his entire existence is just absurd enough that it makes the katya / sofia / andrey / goncharov plotline(s) seem that much more serious. he laughs and jokes and smiles so much more than everyone else does, and in such a self-derogatory way. with the way he represents the violence inherent to the time period and nature of organized crime, his place in the movie becomes a satirical commentary of how needless so many of the deaths are.
i think this is elaborated on because the deaths that take place over the course of the film are also obscured in so many instances, except for when joe kills and is killed. we see the ice pick go through his skull, hear it crack, without any music or shadow to mask it. katya's gun or andrey's dagger are critical parts of the plot, but joe is the personification of violence. everyone else demonstrates the reason why it happens. something about that just drives me insane.
Level 1: Non-murdery Goncharov AUs where Joseph Morelli is just Joe, because obviously he wouldn’t be called that, right?
Level 2: Non-murdery Goncharov AUs where Joseph Morelli has a different, more milieu-appropriate nickname.
Level 3: Non-murdery Gonchraov AUs that go out of their way to explain why Joseph Morelli still has his canon nickname.
Level 4: Non-murdery Goncharov AUs that don’t go out of their way to explain why Joseph Morelli still has his canon nickname.

Realized after posting this one that I haven’t seen any Heart Locket gifs yet either smh what is this fandom even DOING
I wanna make one for Sofia too but haven’t had much luck finding good quality screencaps of her so if you’ve got any please feel free to share them!
no y’all don’t GET it. the fact that in every fucking scene when they talk goncharov stands to the left of andrey. that he stays out of the line of sight of his good eye. that in this way he uses the eye patch more than andrey uses it himself. it’s about the fear of being seen it’s about the developed behaviour of being hyper aware of your surroundings when you feel like you’ve been walking on eggshells your entire life it’s about subconsciously taking advantage of someone’s weakness it’s about unreliable narrators and limited pov but MOST IMPORTANTLY it’s about the fact that when andrey looks FORWARD into what lies ahead goncharov is never part of the picture because he chooses to stay out of frame out of his field of vision
