sequel to this so you should read that first. in which Kurt goes back to Lima to get his man back. a/n: just a warning there's a lot of cheesy dialogue from tv shows and movies in here and I don't own any of that, but goddamn it was too perfect I couldn't pass it up.
Kurt has no idea why he’s here.
He’s made up his mind. Having that talk with Santana really did put things into perspective for him. He belongs with Blaine there’s no denying it now. Not when it’s so obvious.
After breaking up with Adam, he bought a train ticket home and now he’s standing here: in front of McKinley. One hand on the door handle, the other clutched to his chest. His heart is hammering rapidly and he feels like he’s about to pass out, but he has to do this. He came all this way and he can’t chicken out now.
He opens the door and marches purposefully down the halls, turning every corner with caution. He doesn’t know why he does it to be honest. He knows where Blaine is. He’s always known where Blaine is at 3 o’clock on school days. He knows that Blaine is in the choir room rehearsing, so running into him unexpectedly shouldn’t be a problem at this moment.
Kurt jogs to the choir room and freezes slightly, taking a deep breath before entering the room; a big smile on his face that fades when he notices that the only person in the room is Tina, arranging sheet music on top of the piano. She looks up and smiles at him.
“Hi Kurt! What brings you here?”
“Hi. Uhm, have you seen Blaine?” Kurt asks shyly? Why the hell is he suddenly shy?
“Oh,” Tina says, a knowing smirk making its way onto her face. “He’s in the auditorium. Something about better acoustics.” She waves her hand airily, turning back to her work.
Kurt nods and turns with a quiet thank you. He can come back later and give her a proper hello. He can’t right now. His mind is too clouded with Blaine. “Where is Blaine?” “I need Blaine.” “I have to find Blaine.” Blaine is his first priority right now.
He makes his way to the auditorium, stopping when he hears the soft sounds of the piano through the door. It’s a tune he’s heard before. Something he’s listened to with Blaine, and god if that doesn’t make Kurt emotional.
How can I just let you walk away, just let you leave without a trace When I stand here taking every breath with you, ooh You're the only one who really knew me at all
Kurt’s breath catches in his throat. Blaine is singing this song. He knows Blaine is singing this about him. They lyrics are just…too perfect. He’s playing with such passion and it’s passion that Kurt’s seen before. Blaine’s passion for performing is actually one of the things Kurt loves about him. He sits out of sight throughout the song, waiting for the opportune moment. He just…drinks Blaine in, taking in his facial expressions. The way his eyes scrunch up when he sings certain lines. He’s just utterly beautiful when he’s performing. He takes Kurt’s breath away.
Take a good look at me now, 'cos I'll still be standing here And you coming back to me is against all odds that's the chance I've got to take, oh, oho.
Blaine plays the final chords of the song, sniffling a bit at the end, and that’s when Kurt makes his move. Just as Blaine stands, dabbing at his eyes, Kurt rises from his seat.
“That was beautiful,” he says, walking up to join Blaine on the stage, not missing Blaine’s flustered look.
“Kurt! What are you doing here?”
“That song was about me wasn’t it?” Kurt asks, ignoring Blaine’s own question. Blaine bites his lip, his eyes darting everywhere except Kurt’s face.
“I’m sorry,” he says.
“Why are you sorry?”
“I uhm didn’t know that you w-would be here,” Blaine stammers out, his hand rubbing at the back of his neck.
“Well this is awkward.”
“Yeah,” Blaine kicks at the floor, taking a deep breath. He looks like he’s about to say something, but then catches himself.
“Why did you come here, Kurt?” he says accusingly. “Did you come here to sleep with me and then tell me we’re just friends. I might have been okay with it the weekend of the wedding, but I’m not sure I…like it so much now.”
“No, Blaine I… I didn’t come here for that. I just…when did we stop being us?” Kurt says, and Blaine furrows his brows before his face slips into a frown.
“When you started ignoring me for your job,” he answers bluntly, and wow that hurts. It hurts, but it’s what Kurt needs to hear right now. They need to talk about what led them to break up, and even though it sucks it has to happen. So that they can be them again.
“You cheated on me,” Kurt retorts because that’s his go to retort. It’s what he always says and it doesn’t fix anything. It just makes him hurt more because he’s reminding himself of it.
“Why do you think I did it, Kurt? Did you think that I marched into that boy’s house by my own will? I was pushed there. By you,” Blaine says. He’s mad, oh boy he’s mad, but it’s okay. Kurt knows that Blaine has to let his anger out now before they move forward.
“I know, do you think I don’t know that? I’ve spent months fixating on that, but I wasn’t the only one that was wrong here.”
“I know. I know, and I’m sorry, Kurt. I hate myself for that. I really do, but I’m trying to move on and forget about how much I’ve hurt you.”
“I’m trying to forget about that too,” Kurt mutters glumly.
“You succeeded. You moved on,” Blaine comments, letting out a humorless chuckle.
“I ended it.”
“What?”
“I ended things with Adam,” Kurt repeats and gets the urge to smile at Blaine’s face.
“Why? I thought he was perfect. Tall, handsome, British…” Blaine blabbers, and Kurt chuckles.
“He was.” He doesn’t miss Blaine’s face fall at that. “But he wasn’t you, B.”
Blaine’s face scrunches up and he lets out a watery breath. “Don’t.”
“Why not?”
“You can’t say that to me without meaning it.”
“I do mean it,” Kurt starts to explain, but Blaine stops him.
“No, you don’t. You’re the one that told me to never speak to you again. You’re the one that ended it. You’re the one that decided to move on. You’re the one that emphasized the fact that we’re just friends,” he rages, pacing across the stage. Kurt just wants to grab him and pull him into his arms. He wants to hold him and calm him down with kisses, but he doesn’t know if Blaine wants that. He knows he wants that but he isn’t sure Blaine wants it.
“Because I was mad at you, not because I stopped loving you!” Kurt yells, and Blaine snaps his mouth shut.
“Y-You made me believe that it was over between us.”
“It wasn’t over. It still isn’t over.” And before Kurt knows what he’s doing he’s running towards Blaine, catching him into his arms and attaching their lips together. They kiss passionately, as if they could be torn away from each other at any moment, and Kurt is trying to put in everything he can’t say into that kiss. He’s trying to tell Blaine that he loves him and wants him, and he hopes to god that Blaine understands.
They pull apart, and they’re both crying, Blaine grabbing at Kurt’s waist and Kurt grabbing at Blaine’s face, holding it like if it was the most precious diamond in the world.
“Kurt,” Blaine starts, but Kurt shuts him up with another kiss.
“Shhh, shhh, I got you. I got you,” he whispers between kisses. “I want us back, Blaine. I want to be us again. But I need to know that you want to too.”
“I do,” Blaine breathes back, connecting their lips again briefly.
“Good, because this is it for me Blaine. You’re it. You’re my future.” Blaine releases a wrecked sob and buries his face into Kurt’s shoulder, but Kurt keeps talking. “I don’t want to fuck it up again. We can’t do that again. I want you. I’ve always wanted you.”
“I will always want you,” Blaine whispers. Kurt breathes out a sigh of relief, pulling Blaine closer to him before pushing him back at arms length.
“We are going to work on our communication skills,” he states. “No matter what you’re going to talk to me when you’re having a problem. And I’m going to do the same to you. We’re going to work on the long distance thing. We have to. I promise I will not push you to that extreme again I…don’t do that to me again.”
“I won’t, I wont, I wont,” Blaine repeats like a mantra. “I was stupid, so stupid, and scared. I promise I wont do that to you. I love you.”
“I love you so much,” Kurt breathes, and the smile that appears on Blaine’s face is so amazingly breathtaking that it makes Kurt want to cry again. “I missed that smile,” he comments, reaching up to pull at the corners of the other boy’s mouth, making him giggle, and curl into his touch.
“I missed you.”
“I missed you, too.”
They stand holding each other for what feels like hours, both of their hands over Kurt’s heart and it reminds him of the night after West Side Story. The night they lost their virginities to each other.
“Uhm, so I think we should go,” Blaine says after a while.
“Why?”
“Because they’re going to lock the school on us soon.”
“I want to go to your house,” Kurt says. He’s not even sure if Blaine’s parents are home, but he needs to be in Blaine’s room right now. And it doesn’t even have to turn into sex, he just needs to be somewhere and hold Blaine close.
“Okay.” Blaine answers with a knowing smirk, pulling Kurt out of the auditorium. “I hope you realize that our reunion was straight from a romance movie.” Kurt laughs loudly, squeezing Blaine’s hand tightly as they enter the hallway.
“I wouldn’t have had it any other way.”
