The campaign against "plumaged headwear" was one of the most successful in the early animal advocacy movement in the United States, ultimately creating legislative protection for birds and a cultural shift in terms of how the public viewed feathered hats.
"Down with Feathers" ~ Colleen Patrick-Goudreau ~ https://soundcloud.com/colleen-patrick-goudreau/down-with-feathers#t=4:40
Today, feathers and down - cruelly-begotten products of an incredibly lucrative industry - show up in our comforters and coats. Though geese and ducks are the primary victims, ostriches, too, suffer immense pain and distress as the result of humans taking their soft down and colorful plumes.

Love her 💚🌱 #Repost @joyfulvegan ・・・ Veganism is for the wealthy, privileged elite. 😂⠀ .⠀ . ⠀ Meat, dairy and eggs have always been products of privilege and symbols of affluence, affordable only by the wealthy and denied to the poor. Health-wise that’s good! In less affluent populations where meat is be served in small portions and they eat mostly plant foods, they don't suffer from what experts call "diseases of affluence” (atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetes). The richer the country, the more animal products they eat, the more prevalent these diseases.⠀ . ⠀ . ⠀ Even with government subsidies keeping animal products artificially cheap, whole plant foods are still more affordable than animal products. Convenience foods are more expensive whether they’re vegan or not vegan because you’re paying for convenience of not cooking.⠀ . ⠀ . ⠀ It's only because of factory farming and government subsidies that most people can afford to eat every day what are – in fact – very expensive things to produce, and for this cheap "food" we’re paying huge costs — in terms of our health, the Earth, the animals. ⠀ . ⠀ . ⠀ "Don't do nothing because you can't do everything. “ANIMALS WERE PUT ON THIS EARTH FOR HUMANS TO EAT!"⠀ ⠀ ⠀ How is that even possible? Other animals were here long before us. As a species, Homo sapiens has been around for only about 300,000 years, and for thousands of years we were happy meals for the predators who were here first. We were not then and are not now some special species that isn’t part of the natural order of things. We simply figured out a way to game the system. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ But more than that: nobody was put here for anyone else. All forms of life owe their existence to the slow, gradual process of evolution by natural selection and random mutation. And we are NOT where this ends.⠀ ⠀ ⠀ Finally, the various breeds of animals we eat today also weren’t “put here.” We created them through genetic selection, domestication, and artificial breeding. We’re the ones who play God, but then we deny responsibility by saying that some other creator made them just for us. We need to own what we do so we can change what we do. It’s in our hands — nobody else’s. ⠀ ⠀ ⠀ -----------⠀ ⠀ ⠀ PLEASE SHARE, LIKE, AND COMMENT. ⠀ ⠀ #Repost @joyfulvegan ⠀ "Don't do nothing because you can't do everything. Do something. @Regran_ed from @joyfulvegan - “Humans are meant to eat meat. That’s why we have canine teeth!”⠀ .⠀ I blame the ancient Greeks for the fallacy that CANINE teeth justify the human consumption of animal flesh. They called these teeth “canine” for their superficial resemblance to those in dogs. ⠀ .⠀ With the exception of humans, ALL primates have these really long “canines”; have you seen these teeth in gorillas? They’re massive, and they use them to display their strength and to fend off other male gorillas competing for dominance — not for eating flesh. Gorillas are predominantly vegetarian. ⠀ .⠀ In fact, the largest canine teeth of any land animal belong to a true herbivore: the hippopotamus; their teeth can measure upwards of sixteen inches in length, and — as with gorillas — those massive teeth are used for defense and combat — not for eating flesh. ⠀ .⠀ So just because humans have what are called CANINES doesn’t we’re predisposed to eating animal flesh; when you compare human canines to carnivorous canines, ours are blunt and wider; carnivorous canines are often inches in length and razor sharp for tearing raw flesh. Ours would never accomplish that. We don’t have fangs. Better terms for these teeth are eye teeth or cuspids, which means “point.” ⠀ .⠀ "Don't do nothing because you can't do everything. Yes!💕All of this. 👆👇 @Regrann from @joyfulvegan - Sometimes when we see an animal in her natural environment exhibiting behaviors we recognize in ourselves, we're tempted to innocently say, "Oh my gosh...they're just like humans." And it's true, but we're also just like them. ⠀ ⠀ The desire to nurture, nourish, defend, play, explore, wander, groom, bond, isolate, cry, sing, and dance is in all of us.⠀ ⠀ The more we see ourselves in someone else, the more we see that we're all connected. And then what harm can we do? ⠀ ⠀ One of my favorite passages from the Tao Te Ching says, ⠀ ⠀ "See the world as yourself.⠀ Have faith in the way things are.⠀ Love the world as yourself.⠀ Then you can care for all things."⠀ ⠀ This is the thought I carry with me today, and I share it with you to carry in your heart should you choose. ⠀ ⠀ For the animals, both human and non-human, ⠀ CPG⠀ ⠀ ⠀ #joyfulvegan #vegan #compassion #connection #fortheanimals #dailydoseofcompassion #30dayveganchallenge #veganchallenge #plantbased #colleenpatrickgoudreau #fortheanimals #bethechange #animals #dontdonothingbecauseyoucantdoeverything #kindness
