Back on His Feet Masterlist
If you knew PJ well, after what happened yesterday, he’d go seek comfort from his best friend.
Whiskey.
As you woke up from your makeshift bed on the floor in your brother’s one room trailer, you mentally cursed yourself at not realizing it sooner.
Getting your stuff together as quickly as you could, you took a quick shower and got dressed before storming into Carter’s room, where he was passed out awkwardly on the bed. Since this happened quite often, you scribbled a quick goodbye on a sticky note on the nightstand, sticking it to his forehead so he wouldn’t freak out when he woke up.
When you saw the time on the clock, 7:30am, you sighed in frustration. You could either (a): check up on PJ and make sure he gets to his job in the morning, or (b): go to school and face Jughead.
Knowing the decision wasn’t that hard, you grabbed your bug-out bag---the one thing you took everywhere you went. Deciding to keep your brother on lockdown, you took his keys that were carelessly thrown to the floor and walked outside for his beat up Honda.
It doesn’t matter if you weren’t allowed to legally drive without an adult in the car yet.
The law doesn’t need to know everything.
Throwing everything but the keys into the passenger seat, you walked across the trailer park to walk to Jughead’s house. Your heart beat faster with every step, despite the fact that you knew the raven-head wouldn’t be home.
The door was already partially open, and you panicked for a quick second, stepping hurriedly inside. Seeing PJ passed out on the couch, much like your brother was, caused a sigh of relief to escape your mouth, but it was quickly returned as you realized he wasn’t in any shape to go to work.
“PJ,” you called, walking over to the man and shaking his shoulder roughly, only receiving a groan. “C’mon Jones, wake up!”
He only turned his head the other way, mumbling something that vaguely sounded like “Leave me alone.”
“Ugh,” you groaned, rolling your eyes and sitting back onto the floor. A clink of glasses caught your attention, and you suddenly noticed the amount of alcoholic bottles that lay lying around the small trailer home. A stench of stale whiskey hung in the air, and if you had been the same person you were last year, you would’ve scrunched your nose at the smell. But at this point, you were used to it.
Taking a quick survey of the house that probably hadn’t seen a clean day in a while, you decided that after your shift at Pop’s ended tonight, you’d come back here and help him straighten everything.
For now, you had to get to the construction sight.
Driving carefully into the sight where Archie’s dad now worked, you prayed that he wasn’t in the office and that only Hermione was there doing her work. You were close with Veronica’s mom, especially after you both worked frequent shifts at Pop’s together. You had showed her the ropes when others were too preoccupied with their lives to care.
Sneaking into the room, you breathed a sigh of relief when your prayers were answered. “Mione,” You whispered loudly, and she looked up in surprise and shock.
“(Y/N),” she exclaimed. “How---how did you get here?”
“Doesn’t matter,” you cut her off. “I need a huge favor.”
Hermione raised an eyebrow. “Depends on the favor.”
“I need you to clock PJ in for 8am.”
She gave you a confused look, causing you to sigh. “Jughead’s dad. I call him PJ for Pendleton Jones.”
Veronica’s mom nodded in understanding, turning to her computer to grant your request before she froze. “Wait,” she started. “Why exactly are you telling me, and not him?”
You fiddled with your fingers, keeping silent.
“(Y/N), is he even here?”
“No,” you groaned. “But I swear he will be tomorrow, he just got held up---”
“You mean he’s hungover.”
“I---” you stumbled, before sighing in defeat. Leaning against the wall behind you, you looked up at the ceiling. Trying to calm down, you wiped your hands down your face slowly. “I just need you to put in his hours today so that Fred doesn’t think he bailed again.” You walked over to Hermione’s desk, crouching in front of it. “Mione, he won’t give him another chance after this and he just---he needs a little more time to get himself together.”
She looked at you for what felt like forever before sighing. “(Mija/Mijo), this is kinda illegal.”
“Yea,” you shrugged. “None of us are strangers to illegal activities.”
Rolling her eyes, Hermione Lodge did what you asked of her, and in glee you gave her a hug. “Thank you!”
“Make sure this is the only time this is happening,” she scolded you. “(Y/N), he’s not your responsibility.”
You pulled back, giving her a sheepish smile. “I know. This is only until we get him back on his feet.”
Giving you a small smile, Hermione kissed you on the forehead. As you walked out the door sneakily, she called after you: “Drive safe! I don’t want to have to bail you out of jail (Mija/Mijo)!”
The day at Pop’s was as hectic as usual, and it was around 10:30pm when you decided to turn in your apron. A bell at the door caught your attention, and on instinct you turned with a smile on your face to greet the new customers.
When you saw Betty, Archie, Veronica, Kevin, and Jughead, the smile dropped instantly. You turned back and kept your head down as you finished untying your apron, spotting Pops himself pass by you.
“Hey,” you whispered. “Can you take these next few people, I have to go.”
Pops smiled kindly at you, thrusting his head at the door. “Go ahead, you’ve worked hard enough today.”
Giving him a grateful smile, you grabbed your bug-out bag and rushed out of the diner, hoping no one saw you.
“(Y/N)!”
Unfortunately for you, Veronica did. You walked faster to your car, but turns out the Lodge Heiress could be quite fast, and she caught up to you in a matter of seconds.
“Hey,” she pulled you to a stop. “You were gonna leave without saying goodbye?”
“I have to go Ronnie,” you mumbled, attempting to get past her but she stepped in your way.
“Not so fast Speedy,” she said. “Why weren’t you in school today?”
“I was busy,” you said instantly, causing her to raise an eyebrow that reminded you too much of Hermione.
“Oh really? Doing what?”
“I was in the Mayor’s office,” you lied, letting the words slip off your tongue. “I was asking for another job opportunity just in case she had any openings.”
Though you sounded very convincing, Veronica didn’t buy it as she crossed her arms. “There’s no use lying to me (Y/N), my mom told me about today.”
You transferred your gaze from hers to the ground, your posture sagging in defeat. “Look, Ronnie---”
“I don’t know what your doing,” she mumbled, stepping a little closer to you. “But (Y/N), FP is none of your concern. He’s a grown man, let him drink himself to death for all you should care---”
“And what happens then?!” You shouted, her words hitting too hard to home. “PJ dies, Jughead and Jellybean doesn’t have a father, Gladys doesn’t have a husband, I don’t have someone to care about me anymore---” You interrupted yourself, using the fleshy part of your hands to wipe away the tears that decided to leak out of your eyes. Damn you for crying two nights in a row.
“I’m just,” you breathed heavily, choosing your words carefully. “Getting him back on his feet. Get everything back to normal and it’ll be fine.”
Without listening to what she had to say, you pushed past her and stepped into your car, speeding off. You stopped by a grocery store on your way to PJ’s house, gathering food as well as cleaning supplies for what you knew was going to be a long night.
Parking your car near your house, you left everything inside except $100 you had gathered from tips that day. You snuck into your house as silently as possible, before going to a loose floorboard where you kept your rainy day jar.
You had at least $1,300 saved up at this point, any cent that you could spare never going into anything you wanted. The money you made went into necessities for the house, necessities for Carter, then Rainy Day Jar. Now, you had to add in necessities for PJ into the mix, but you didn’t mind much.
Closing the jar as silently as possible, you put it back carefully before going back outside and driving the short way to PJ’s house, where the lights were on.
At the sound of the car the man himself walked out, and you greeted him with a large smile, smacking the top of the car.
“Get out here PJ,” you called to him. “We’ve got work to do.”
PART DEUX! Any suggestions for the next part?
