my mom expressed to me how ridiculous it was that my sister had to find someone to work for when she called in sick, instead of the manager finding someone to work my sister. I said, yeah that’s how it works. If you don’t find someone to take your shift, it’s on you. They can put all the responsibility and accountability on you, because you’re easy to fire and easy to replace. There’s 20+ kids who’ll take your job for a lesser pay if you slip up just once.
“Well then what are you supposed to do, show up to work sick?” my mom asked. I told her yeah. You suck it up, go to work. “And you get the coworkers, the customers sick?” Yep. Unless you’re literally bleeding out of your eyeballs, in the eyes of the manager, you can work.
“Well that’s not what I have to do at my work,” my mom says, “If I’m sick, they find someone to cover for me.”
Yeah but your job isn’t expendable. If they fire you, it’s at a huge disadvantage for them because finding someone to replace you is actually hard to do. They have to find someone with your specific set of skills and experience. People who can do the jobs my sister and I do are a dime a dozen. We’re expendable. We’re not valuable.
