A Gondola by Julius Exner

Julius Exner (Nov. 30, 1825 - 1910) was a Danish painter who excelled in genre painting and portraits. Exner was Academy trained and at the same time one of the most popular artists of the 19th century in Denmark. His humorous paintings of peasants and commoners were often copied - and in fact we own a copy of one of his canvases (the original, alas, is held by SMK).

Here is what almost could pass for a topical work, but in fact shows a farm girl in traditional harvest gear, complete with protective mask (a so-called ‘strude’ - specific to the small Danish island of Fanø):
