App Updates: Yosemite Day
Apple released OS X Yosemite today and a few apps have already started receiving updates for it. I'd like to talk briefly on those, along with a few apps that have debuted on the App Store this evening.
Deliveries by Junecloud is one of my most used iOS apps. I order a lot of stuff online and it lets me keep track of when everything is coming. It has a great user interface, it's always up to date with background sync, and when I add a Tracking Number to one device it syncs over through iCloud. Today, with Yosemite, Junecloud released Deliveries for Mac.
Deliveries for Mac has almost the same UI as Deliveries on iPad, but it's been optimized for Yosemite with a translucent UI. It also brings with it a Today widget so you can track your deliveries from Notification Center, and an "Add to Deliveries" extension that lets you send a Tracking Number from say Safari to Deliveries.
Mike Piontek, developer of Deliveries, says an iOS app with iPhone 6 optimization, the Today widget, and "Add to Deliveries" extension is coming soon.
It's $4.99 for the Mac app and $4.99 for the iOS app, and you should get both.
iWork — Pages, Numbers, Keynote
Apple updated its iWork for OS X suite to version 5.5, bringing a refreshed design for Yosemite, support for iCloud Drive and Handoff, better image support, and more. MacStories has a full overview of the changes.
This is a tricky one. When iOS 8 was released, Tumblr updated its app with an extension that let you post stuff to Tumblr from anywhere with a Share Menu. That means you can post a picture to Tumblr from the Photos app, link to a website from Safari, etc.
However, to have this functionality, you have to have an app that creates the extension. I guess Tumblr wanted to bring the same functionality to the Mac, so the new Tumblr app does nothing other than take you to tumblr.com but now you'll be able to post to Tumblr from Safari and anywhere else with a Share Menu on your Mac.
You can download the app for free here.
A quick note on iOS apps: Facebook, Instagram, and TeeVee released updates to their apps today (yesterday for Facebook) finally supporting the new iPhone 6 displays.
Facebook Messenger also received an update. "Now you can add colorful drawings and text to photos from your camera roll before you send them."
The iWork suite has also been updated to version 2.5 with all the same features as the Mac. Again, MacStories has a full overview of the changes.
