RWBY Character Introductions
Trailers
Welcome to RWBY. Created by Monty Oum (1981 - 2015). Written by Monty’s best friends, Miles Luna and Kerry Shawcross. Songs performed, produced, and mixed by Jeff Williams, publisher of Jeff WilliamsMusic (ASCAP). Lead vocals by Jeff’s daughter, Casey Lee Williams.
Rooster Teeth was an entertainment company headquartered in Austin, Texas. It was founded in 2003 by Burnie Burns, Joel Heyman, Matt Hullum, Geoff Ramsey, Jason Saldaña, and Gus Sorola. Burns bought the brand back from Warner Bros., the studio that shut it down in Spring 2024, with his independent company, Box Canyon Productions. Let’s just hope he doesn’t make the same mistakes that led to the company’s downfall in the first place.
In RWBY, almost every character is based on a fairy tale, mythology, history, pop culture, etc., but are not one-to-one replicas.
When the show was first starting, the voice cast consisted of mostly Rooster Teeth employees before eventually being able to hire actual voice actors, alongside other internet content creators.
The “Red” Trailer introduces Ruby Rose, based on Little Red Riding Hood and voiced by Lindsay Jones, a supervising producer and frequent member of Rooster Teeth’s Achievement Hunter.
The “White” Trailer introduces Weiss Schnee, based on Snow White and voiced by Kara Eberle, who used to be Rooster Teeth’s receptionist. Not in this trailer, though. Weiss’ singing vocals are provided by Casey Lee Williams.
The “Black” Trailer introduces Blake Belladonna, based on Beauty and the Beast and voiced by Arryn Zech, a graduate of the University of Texas at Austin with a degree in journalism.
The “Yellow” Trailer introduces Yang Xiao Long, based on Goldilocks and voiced by Barbara Dunkelman, a Rooster Teeth creative director and their resident pun master.
Also introduced in these trailers are the Creatures of Grimm, named after the Brothers Grimm. Each type of Grimm is based on a different animal (Ruby faces a bunch of wolf-like Beowolves).

The students launch into Emerald Forest, named after the Emerald City from The Wizard of Oz.
1x9: “The Badge and the Burden”
New character:
Professor Peter Port, based on Peter and the Wolf and voiced by Ryan Haywood, a former Achievement Hunter member. Ugh.
The “Archive Men” poster is a reference to the aforementioned Achievement Hunter, Rooster Teeth’s video gaming division, founded by Geoff Ramsey and Jack Pattillo in 2008. It was originally based on the achievement mechanic in video games but grew to become a core component of RT, hosting a wide variety of videos related to video games, earning it the name Let’s Play. It dissolved after publishing its final video in 2023. The six men featured on the poster are caricatures of channel’s former main six, Ryan Haywood, Ray Narvaez Jr., Jack Pattillo, Michael Jones, Geoff Ramsey, and Gavin Free. Other members included Lindsay Jones, Jeremy Dooley, Matt Bragg, Trevor Collins (who married Barbara Dunkelman), Mica Burton, Alfredo Diaz, Fiona Nova, Ky Cooke, and BlackKrystel.
Additional Voice:

Right off the bat, we’re introduced to three more villains:
Emerald Sustrai, based on Aladdin and voiced by Katie Newville, ex-wife of Shane Newville.
Mercury Black, based on the Roman equivalent to Hermes and voiced by J.J. Castillo, former host of Screen Play.
Now, Torchwick talks like he’s the head honcho of the villain operations, but they all really answer to the mysterious shadowy lady from Volume 1, Cinder Fall, based on Cinderella and voiced by Jessica Nigri, a cosplayer.
Sun’s friend is Neptune Vasilias, based on the god of the sea of the same name and voiced by Kerry Shawcross, the series’ co-writer and current supervising director.
Additional Voice:
Tukson: ADAM ELLIS
2x2: “Welcome to Beacon”
In “Welcome to Beacon”, introduced here is the leader of the Atlas Military, James Ironwood, voiced by Jason Rose.
When it comes to the names of the Kingdoms, Vale, Mistral, Atlas, and Vacuo: Atlas is named after a Titan from Greek mythology.
2x3: “A Minor Hiccup”
With Penny revealed to be a robot, I can now say that she’s based on Pinocchio.
Additional Voices:
CCT AI: MEGAN CASTRO (strategic sales specialist, sales executive, and events coordinator)
Schnee Corp Operator: EMILY McBRIDE (former online store manager, has since started her own company called Nosejoy)

…and twins Miltia and Melanie Malachite, based on Rose-Red and Snow-White (not to be confused with Weiss’ inspiration) and both voiced by Maggie Tominey, a 2D animation producer.
But the main event is the introduction to everyone’s favorite RWBY antagonist, Neopolitan, named after Neapolitan ice cream (vanilla complexion, chocolate and strawberry hair), based on Hecate aka Trivia, the goddess of a three-way crossroads, and was added so late in production that CRWBY couldn’t find a voice actor in time, so they made her mute.
Additional Voices:

Ah, yes. Ruby’s mother, Summer Rose, named after the Last Rose of Summer.

This also introduces us to the Color Naming Rule, a set of guidelines that define how the characters are named. The rules were first revealed by Monty Oum as a guide for naming fan-created original characters. Virtually all canon characters follow the rule. The rules state that names of characters in RWBY must live up to at least one of the following requirements: Be a color, sound like a color, mean a color, or make people think of a color. The rule applies to first name, last name, and even the combination of the first and last name as well as their surname, whether it’s as obvious as Mercury Black or more subtle like Weiss Schnee. In addition, all team names must be a four-letter acronym that spells a word that also abides by the above criteria. Ship names have also been given color-based names, as did Ruby’s team attack names while fighting Torchwick.

Fox Alistair, possibly based on Todd from The Fox and the Hound.
Velvet Scarlatina, based on the Velveteen Rabbit and voiced by Caiti Ward, Butterfly Ambassador for the Life Changing Experiences Foundation and wife of Achievement Hunter co-founder Jack Pattillo. Velvet is indeed the same rabbit girl from Volume 1, originally supposed to be a one-off character but became so popular that she ended up on Team CFVY (like Suki from Avatar: The Last Airbender).
Yatsuhashi Daichi, named after a Japanese treat and voiced by Joe MacDonald, an animator.
“Breach” also marks the last episode where Ren and Mercury are voiced by Monty Oum and J.J. Castillo before Oum’s passing in 2015 after failing to wake up from a coma and Castillo’s departure to pursue other projects.

3x1: “Round One”
The birds flying toward the sun is an exact replica of Monty Oum’s signature, as this was the first episode to air after his passing.
Also, Ren and Mercury have new voice actors from this point forward. Since Monty’s passing, Ren has been voiced by Monty’s older brother, Neath Oum. And remember when I said CRWBY would eventually be able to afford voice actors? Well, due to J.J. Castillo’s departure, Mercury has a new voice actor, Yuri Lowenthal.

Additional Voices:

Ironwood is based on the Tin Man from The Wizard of Oz. Yes, everyone in Ozpin’s inner circle is based on a character from The Wizard of Oz.
And now that we know that Adam and Blake were a thing, I can now say that Adam is based on both the Beast and Gaston to Blake’s Beauty and the Beast.
3x12: “End of the Beginning”
Well, you’ve passed the initiation.
Finally, our main antagonist reveals herself. The mysterious narrator from Episode 1, Salem, based on the Wicked Witch of the West from The Wizard of Oz and voiced by Jen Taylor.

This almost happened with Jessie James Grelle (Tyrian). She heard of the hard time Rooster Teeth was giving Jenzen (alongside tons of other controversies about the company that were starting to pile up around that time) and announced that she refused to work for a company that thinks belittling queer people is funny. Now that RWBY is owned by VIZ Media, this is no longer the case, and Grelle is looking forward to returning.

“The Grimm Campaign” - Laura Yates, Chad James, Chris Kokkinos, and Kerry Shawcross play a RWBY-themed Dungeons & Dragons game.
“Fairy Tales” - an animated series featuring the stories included in the book RWBY: Fairy Tales of Remnant.
“Ice Queendom” - an anime series co-created by Studio SHAFT.
“After the Fall” and “Before the Dawn” - a pair of novels set in Vacuo starring Team CFVY following the Fall of Beacon.
