Coronavirus, Activism, and Barber Shops

.

Today I had my hair cut to a barber shop that I hadn't visited for a long while not because of the pandemic, but because I had found my own barber who is just a few meters away from our residence. Apparently, they are still closed despite the lift of lockdown.

So I did a cute distance of walk to this shop and revisit them like I used to. Upon sitting on the barber chair, the man and I agreed to put our face masks on considering the cops nearby. I could hardly recognize if the barber was the same person who asked me if I were a student when I first entered the shop. I affirmed in matter of split second to avail the 30% discount. Pre-corona times.

Anyway, he bagan talking to me, like those little chitchats to fill out some dead air. He noticed my hair has overgrown, and I agreed because it was untouched for three months, except that I tried hard to do small cuts on my hair alone when it already tickles my ears.

The barber was talkative as though the topic he had in mind was prepared. First he said the Chinese must have the cure for the coronavirus after surviving the third wave of viral transmission. It was 11am and just woke up at 10:40am, so I was reluctant to respond. He then shifted to the morality of Filipinos, saying the Philippines are not disciplined unlike the Chinese. He added that UP students have begun rallying and protesting despite the pandemic. He was also aware of the Anti-Terrorism Bill and the BLM in the U.S.

He wanted this conversation so he deserved a response. I told him that that Chinese controlled the information about the virus and kept it secret to the public. I told him that the UP students are "concerned sa lipunan," and they protest peacefully. With this, he agreed because he saw the looting and destruction in the U.S. I also told him that the real intent of terrorism is to harm people. So in line with anti-terror bill, UP students shouldn't be branded as terrorists. I also added that with this Bill, it seems the government is trying to hide something, and they don't trust the justice system. The barber tend to see the light because he knows there wouldn't be a legal warrant to arrest. Lastly I advised him that if you have a right to support your favorite politician, then you must have the right to express your grievances to the government. And these laws are encoded to our constitution, if you went to school and properly educated yourself, you would understand.

Finally, he asked me if I want to shave my sideburns and I told him to just clean the edges. This time, my hair cut is almost done and to this barber guy, I was honest when I told him that I am already working so I don't need a student discount. I didn't tell him this will be the last time he will cut my hair and the last time I would want a clean cut to make it easier for him. Hopefully my barber will open soon.
