Friendly reminder that there are people who eat mayo straight from the jar
The meat and dairy industries are some of the most environmentally damaging industries in the world. The makers of “Just Mayo” are now on the bring of unveiling the world’s first vegan scrambled egg! Check out this video and see how these guys are using Science and Technology to make a more sustainable food system!
Hellmann’s Vegan Mayo: Hell to the No
You may recall that a couple of years ago Hellmann’s parent company, Unilever, sued Hampton Creek, producers of Just Mayo, for false advertising and fraud. Why? Because a more delicious, healthier, and cruelty-free, vegan mayo was luring people away from their nasty, egg-laden product they asserted that mayonnaise, by definition, had to contain eggs.
We’ve heard this type of story before and fear of this kind of bullying is why some companies resort to calling their offerings something that is a variation of the traditional term; think about when soy/coconut/almond/cashew/rice milk is referred to as mylk (shudder), or the vegan cheese = Gary saga.
So Unilever went there, but Hampton Creek’s response was pretty epic in that they simply refused to back down. Ultimately, Unilever gave up. Then, late last year, Hellmann’s unexpectedly came out with their own vegan mayo. For a reason that I assume can only be chalked up to principle, they decided to call it “vegan carefully crafted dressing and sandwich spread.” So much catchier, amirite?
So, the maker of one of the grossest foods on earth (aside from the obvious cruelty associated with eggs, it’s pretty much just whipped, raw egg yolks: BARF) tried to bully a vegan company to set a precedent...and failed. Then they figured, “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em,” and produced their own variation--one I vowed never to purchase because I don’t support bullies. Unfortunately, my (omnivorous) dad was not as invested in this saga and, when he heard me lament that I was out of Vegenaise- my personal drug mayo of choice, he picked up the Hellmann’s vegancarefullycrafteddressingandsandwichspread to be helpful.
We had a bit of a stand-off, the ugly jar and myself. To start, I did not like the color AT ALL. Then, when I opened it, the smell of vinegar smacked me in the face. While most vegan and non-vegan mayos include vinegar, I’ve never had one smell so distinctly of it. I slathered it on one of my favorite sammies per usual, but it just didn’t look right so I chose not to take a picture.
My first bite was a mouthful of disappointment. To say this was a far cry from Vegenaise would be an understatement. I actually considered discarding the sammie in its entirety, but who does that? I forged on, but bite after bite I was more and more nauseated. There was something so inherently heavy and eggy about this vegancarefullycrafteddressingandsandwichspread that I really began to wonder if the jar had been mislabeled. Shortly after I was done I got a stomach ache--which may or may not have been self-induced from disgust. Either way, I renewed my dedication to Vegenaise on the spot.
The one good thing I can say about the vegancarefullycrafteddressingandsandwichspread is that maybe a non-vegan who is unfamiliar with the more mainstream vegan offerings of Vegenaise and Just Mayo might consider picking up a vegan version of what they find familiar. Here’s hoping. They certainly won’t get me again.

Just Healthy Mayo
Just Mayo from Hampton Creek is a tasty healthy mayo alternative. ‘Just’ as in the adjective meaning fair or reasonable, is behind the name of this product. They have a whole line of sauces and salad dressings that I can’t wait to try, but this post is about the Just Mayo.
I’ve been eating healthy whole wheat wraps lately and I smear about a tablespoon (=100 calories) of the Just Mayo on the wrap before adding my meat, cheese and vegetables. I am no Mayo connoisseur, but it tastes and smells like mayo. They don’t use any artificial stuff to achieve that either.
