I keep seeing people claim things like

"I shop on Temu because xyz fashion isn't accessible" and then that fashion is things like alt, goth, or punk. Movements based in DIY, reuse, and customization. Rejection of the norm and conformity.

accessibility =/= convenience

accessible does not mean easy. It means available and within your resources. Shopping secondhand, altering clothes, creating your own accessories, go to clothing swaps, these are all things you can do at low or no cost.

But these things require effort.

Thrift stores aren't neatly organized so you can see everything and neatly pick your size, you have to dig and hunt for the good finds, and the perfect piece might not be exactly your size. Altering clothes means research, learning a new skill, and accepting you won't always get it right the first time.

"but thrift stores are just as expensive as buying new now" but switching back to mass produced garbage isn't going to fix that, and theres more benefits to buying secondhand than just a lower price tag.

if you want to actually be punk, alt or goth, it needs to go deeper than ripped jeans and eyeliner.
