Life Goes On While You Are Grieving

It’s been a while since I actually wrote a blog on here. There’s a reason for that.  You see, my family has lost a whopping seven family members this year. Yeah, that’s a lot.... but life doesn’t stop.

The grief comes in waves. The grief is different with every person. It depended on the type of relationship I had with that family member or the circumstances of their passing. Surprisingly, no one died from Covid-related illnesses. There were two among the seven that really hit me the hardest.

My cousin Edwin’s death and my Aunt Gloria’s were the hardest for me. Do I want to share what happened with them? Maybe not right now. If you can read between the lines, no they weren’t your normal run of the mill health deaths. They were both horrible, unnecessary and unexpected. Different sides of the family, but still...

My grieving process was different for both. There was definitely anger with both of these. I had some guilt with my Aunt’s, but after I had a talk with a family member, it quickly went away. That was one huge take away with that one that I want to pass along to others. Never blame yourself when a loved one dies. Yes, I understand that can be part of a grieving process, but in hindsight, don’t blame yourself.

Grief can be a fickle thing. Oddly enough, the same week Edwin died, one of my best friends, her brother died. Her grieving process was completely different than mine. Even through my grief, watching hers was painful. I could feel hers on top of mine. The freaky thing... the same week my Aunt Gloria died, the same friend.... her Aunt died.

Grief while moving through life, it’s something we have to do. We cannot just lie down and quit life. We can’t just say “eff” this job. We can’t just stop parenting our kids. We can’t just shrug off our responsibilities. Truth is, my responsibilities is what kept me going. I focused so much on my job during my grieving stage to get me through my grief.

Did I have my moments of crying? Oh absolutely. I did it behind closed doors. I wanted to remain strong for my parents and kids. This was my dad’s nephew and my mom’s sister that I’m talking about. The Thanksgiving holiday was hard, I won’t sugarcoat it. I’m giving my mom a few sentimental gifts for Christmas. I’m assuming some tears will be shed and shared. It’s what my heart led to me do for her.

Y’all, that’s my mama! Five of the seven of these deaths were her side of the family. She has lost a lot this year and the loss of her sister just about did her in. But life keeps moving around her. It keeps moving around me. Lord knows I made mistakes at work, but I was present at work. I showed up and worked through my grief. I feel like my grief made me a stronger person.

Everything I’ve been through in my life had made me a stronger person. Would you really think that grief would make you a stronger person? After the year I have had, I would tell you without a doubt, grief can make you a stronger person. You can grieve and keep moving through life.

I feel the world 🌎 should learn about the disabilities people can be born with and it should be essential to become educated on these disabilities versus judging and ostracizing people who have any kind of medical disability especially Autism & Down syndrome and any of the relatable disabilities out here in the world .
