A rich politician enters a restaurant, shakes hands with a professor very kindly, takes out a gun and shoots the professor dead in front of all the people. This politician calls the first-person narrator, a young lawyer, to examine his case with the assumption, that the murderer was someone else. It is no secret that the politician gets his freedom back, what the lawyer never wanted. . That's the start of "The Execution of Justice" from Friedrich Dürrenmatt. The young lawyer realizes too late, in which trap the judiciary throws him, because he mistakes it with justness. It’s a big play about who utilises who, who controls who for his own well. What is justness? All that in so many layers and truly intelligent, landing in the question about the big picture. . My mind won’t forget the picture when a dentist's dentures fall on the ground in a restaurant and the people around him got tears of laughter. The dentist crawling on all fours, searching his dentures and everyone kicking these further through the room. That’s this grotesque Dürrenmatt I love so much. A titillative and honest feeling comes over me. So threatening, dark and big images. And so are the characters, like the boozy, resigned lawyer in the red-light milieu, or the filthy rich, growth-restricted, lonely lady, described as „creature“ that gets carried around on arms. “What then shall we say? Is God unjust? Not at all! For he says to Moses, "I will have mercy on whom I have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I have compassion." It does not, therefore, depend on man's desire or effort, but on God's mercy.”

Every now and then, the ever-so familiar question of the justification of God’s justness pops into my mind: if God is just, is sovereign over all things, and works for the good of those who love Him, then why does He allow for such terrible circumstances to occur? Why do some people get to enjoy carefree lives without so much as a glimpse of misery, while others are overwhelmed with sorrows of loss, illness, etc.? If God permits this kind of unfairness to rule our lives, then is He REALLY just?

After I typed that last question, a soft voice, more still than the sound of snowflakes drifting on a winter evening, called out to me. It told me the answer I’ve already known deep in my heart, but with a sort of affectionate sense of gentleness rather than irritation, despite my asking of these same questions time after time.

The questions that I had posed are pretty commonly asked - and yet everyone reaches vastly different conclusions. The answers that people construct for themselves on the basis of their own knowledge may be the very reason why they choose to avoid Christianity altogether. Honestly, if I didn’t have faith, I would probably end up drawing the same conclusion that God is neither good nor just. However, because of the verses I began this post with and because of the faith God instilled in me, I know the truth. Just as the landowner of the parable in Matthew 20 answered the hired hands’ complaints with the question, “Don’t I have the right to do what I want with my own money?”, God also has every right to do whatever He pleases with us. He created us. How can we question the very being who formed us? He’s quick to give, but also quick to take. If everything we’ve been given is a gift from God, then who are we to lash out at Him if He decides to remove the gifts He’s given us? They weren’t ours to begin with - everything belongs to Him and Him alone, including our own lives. Therefore, we should strive to remember this and rejoice in every storm & every triumph for our God is fighting for our cause without fail. It won’t be easy - Jesus never promised life would be easy or fair. But OUR God is just, magnificent in mercy, and abundant in compassion; and when we stand before His throne, these questions will immediately transform into perfect understanding.
