I went through a lengthy phase of total obsession with Jekyll and Hyde when I was in high school, the music is amazing!! Looking back at it post-obsession, I think there are probably too many ballads and it throws off the pacing of the show, but like..I don't actually care because every song is just so good
Oh man, my Jekyll & Hyde obsession also started when I was in high school and the drama club did the show my sophomore year. So, I had friends in the show and went to the show and I was like:
Can we talk about Jekyll & Hyde the musical for a real quick sec? Too late, I’m definitely going to do it anyway. Here are some of my favorite things about Jekyll & Hyde the musical:
1. The absolute over-the-top heavy-handed smack you upside the head motifs of good and evil. Like. They basically shout it at you every song. Including a song literally called Good and Evil.
2. The Facade reprises. They’re ridiculous and I laugh every time.
3. When Dr. Jekyll is trying to get funding for his experiments and Sir Danvers calls for a vote and they all just go NAY NAY NAY NAY NAY NAY NAAAAAAAAAAAAAAY.
4. First Transformation. And Dr. Jekyll is still singing his goddamn heart out while convulsing on the stage.
5. I enjoy singing few Broadway songs more than I enjoy singing any of Lucy’s songs because I like to imagine that I am as talented as Linda Eder while I’m in my car.
6. THE END OF HIS WORK AND NOTHING MORE WHEN THEY’RE ALL SINGING AND JEKYLL IS JUST LIKE “FAAAAAATHER” BUT THEN EMMA COMES IN WITH THAT HELLA HIGH NOTE AND MY SOUL TRANSCENDS TO ANOTHER MUSICAL PLANE.
6. In His Eyes is chock-full of romantic cliches and, again, a little over the top, but my high school self lived for those romantic cliches.
7. I have a lot of feelings about Carry On and how on the OBC the whole song builds and then kind of cracks towards the end and, like, yes, give me that drama. It’s the best.
8. THE ENTIRE DAVID HASSELHOFF RECORDING IS A GIFT NONE OF US AS HUMAN BEINGS LIVING ON THIS PLANET DESERVE.
9. Hyde coming into Lucy’s…boudoir???? before Dangerous Game and she’s like “Oh, I thought it was someone else” and then he says “For a moment it almost was.” WHHHHHAAAAAAAAT.
10. All of Confrontation, obviously.
10A. This musical actually includes a real lyric that is: TO KILL OUTSIDE ST. PAUL’S, REQUIRES A LOT OF BALLS and it is my favorite thing that has happened in the history of theater.
