This is what happened to me to a certain extent. My sister knew about Ichihime, and liked them, but told me he was unfortunately in love with another girl. One day, I caught that scene during the Grimmjow vs Ichigo fight when Orihime asks him not to die And I was like: ??? That's the girl who's not corresponded? So, I went to the source, the manga, read it all and became a huge Ichihime shipper
omggg. That’s what was so crazy about the bleach shipwars and IR shippers, so many people acted like it was canon that Ichigo was in love with Rukia?? A done deal?? They didn’t just talk about it like it was their own interpretation or belief, they talked about it like it was an indisputable manga fact. Like, one of the reasons they called us ichihime shippers stupid and delusional all the time was because Ichigo was “already in love with Rukia” and it was just like??? Where??? What chapter are you getting this information from? Which page??
It was so weird. You couldn’t even engage in a reasonable debate with them because they dug their heels in the sand when it came to Ichigo’s feelings for Rukia already being cemented in canon. And then when it came to Orihime’s feelings for Ichigo, feelings that actually were cemented in canon, with the word “love” being written by Kubo himself, no debates about it.....then they would say “no, she doesn’t actually love him. It’s just a schoolgirl crush/obsession, that’s not real love.”
So, to them, things that weren’t canon were canon, and things that were canon weren’t actually canon. It was wild.
