New #review #ThisIsKindOfAnEpicLoveStory by #KacenCallender This is Kind of an Epic Love Story by Kacen Callender is such a sweet story of young love. The characters are endearing, and so real. You can't help but feel bad for Nate every time he fucks up because you can sympathize with him too. I also want to read his script now! You just want to cheer the rest of them on too - Ollie, Flo, Ashley, and even Gideon. My maternal instincts fired up several times, lol. I really enjoyed the diversity of characters and found myself trying to remember the signs she described, as I used to know some ASL. Like teens IRL, the book is filled with angst, about friendships, romantic relationships, familial relationships, school, wondering what the future will bring. Being scared of the unknown... Hell, being an 'adult' is a lot like this too! And "maybe the ending isn't even really the point. New #review #FelixEverAfter by #KacenCallender So if you’ve been following me for a bit, you’ve probably noticed a trend in the authors I’m reading this year, or you might have seen the posts where I pointed out that I was committing myself to a challenge this year – one in which I only read books written by #BIPOC authors. I’ve managed that for the most part, with the exception of a few ARC reviews for authors to whom I’ve been committed for over a year or sometimes what seems like a lifetime. 🖤 But I realized with the arrival of #Pride month that I need to actually put what I preach about intersectionality into practice. So I’ve been looking not only for BIPOC voices to read, but BIPOC voices who also fall outside of the ‘cishet’ realm. I had originally bought Felix Ever After for my Eldest Spawn after she’d asked for it. At the time, she didn’t really like to read, so I figured almost any book was good enough to get her. I’d intended to read it but just hadn't gotten to it yet (I think mostly because it's a paperback and I prefer ebooks these days). This book has totally erased the books I’ve read recently – like wiped them out of my mind & filled it with itself. Felix Ever After is such a rollercoaster of a book!! I laughed, I loved, I raged, I wept both tears of pain & joy. This book is such a glorious celebration of the journey each one of us must take towards accepting ourselves and loving who we are, understanding that our own validation is the only validation we really need. Felix Ever After should be required reading for everyone in school. It gives so much insight into the things that trans kids, and especially queer trans kids of color, are confronted with on a daily basis, on TOP of all the things that teens are already dealing with – so many people can connect with these feelings, even if they don’t identify with any of the identities being discussed. I swear that the bookmark choice was completely random, but I feel like there’s no better bookmark for a book about the journey of finding yourself, your voice, and your identity. 🌸 The people that recommended this book to me, where absolutely right. It was emotional and powerful. I didn’t cry, but I most definitely teared up several times. 🌸 Felix Ever After reminds the reader that even when the world tries to destroy you, and keep you down, that there are those who will always support you. It reminds the reader that it may take a while to find your voice, your identity, or that you might even question it for the rest of your life, and that’s okay. You’re here. You exist. 🌼Felix Ever After🌼 . I know that I should be prioritizing my physical TBR but I’ve had to ebook for Felix Ever After by Kacen Callender for a few months and it was calling to me so I put it on my TBR for September. I don’t typically give five stars to contemporaries but this one certainly deserved it. Going in, I knew this book followed a black, trans, teen named Felix, and someone at his school posts old pictures of him as well as his deadname for everyone to see. There is so much more to this story, though. This is a story about acceptance and privilege and identity and love between friends, family, and partners. This book is emotional and funny and so much more than I expected.
