Thin Air
“What still haunts me decades later; is the fact that although the mountain killed five of our number, we only laid to rest four.”
In a nutshell…
This book is the tale of a group of foolhardy explorers from the simpler time of pre-war England. Centred around the rivalry of two brothers and their shared loved of classic legends of great explorations the pair decide to lead an exploration to the summit of Kanchenjunga, the famously fabled most deadly mountain in the world. However, upon arrival, there is evidence that there is another more dangerous presence upon the mountain.
My Highlights
📖 Atmosphere
There is no mistaking this book for any other that I have experienced, the descriptions are wonderfully vivid without taking too much attention away from the action and the mountain really becomes an omniscient presence spectating past and present events.
📖 Suspense.
The events preceding this book’s hold the key to understanding the presence upon the mountain and are very cautiously dripped into the story to embellish details and events. This has a really neat effect of gradually building the unsettling and creepy to the reader. Reading this late at night I was quite reluctant to switch off my light after some especially uncomfortable scenes.
📖 Intrigue.
It was very easy to get hooked on this story. The inclusion of past explorations into the storyline really played into this because you find out certain details and shocking revelations at the same time as the characters, however, the descriptions add hints at what is to come which the protagonist is oblivious to which really feed the hunger for more chapters.
📖 Simple but effective.
This book was very simple and easy to recommend because of this. I’ve already passed it onto my Mum who is loving it just as much as myself and doesn’t usually share my taste in books. The story is made from a very natural feeling of discomfort which easily draws the reader in without the need for speculation on twists and answer to the problem, or deep emotionally connection to the characters it just simply allows you to witness the story of this expedition.
I would rate this as ★★★★★
