Do you have some concerns about how IDW's Transformers reboot will handle both Windblade and Starscream? If so what are your concerns and how would you have them be handled in the reboot?
When it comes to Starscream my biggest concern is that they’ll regress him back to being a shallow, one-dimensional bad guy. The thing I love about IDW Starscream is that he’s this complex, supremely messed up person with doubts, fears and longings, wearing a mask of petty narcissism to hide how twisted he is underneath. I’d hate for them to only keep the mask and throw out all fascinating depth it conceals.
If they take the same sort of route with reboot Windblade as they have with Cyberverse Windblade then I’ll be delighted, because Cyberverse Windblade is delightful. I think perhaps one of the worst things they could do with Windblade is just treat her as a generic hero protagonist and not carry over any of the traits that gave her character extra flavour. Luckily they managed to avoid that in Cyberverse, so hopefully the reboot will take cues from that.
I would certainly very much like to see some sort of connection between them in the reboot, whether it be that they’re arch-enemies, rivals, former friends, hell even the TF equivalent of siblings could be interesting given they’re both red flight frames. It wouldn’t be a deal breaker for me, but I’d be a bit sad if they have nothing significant to do with each other whatsoever in the reboot.
As for how I’d like to see them handled, I would want the reboot to take the core features of what made them interesting in IDW, and then add something new, maybe taking some inspiration from other continuities as well. While I’d definitely want them to have many of the elements that made me love their IDW counterparts, I wouldn’t want them to be exactly the same, because otherwise what’s the point of rebooting? As for their relationship, I’d love to see them have a complex, ambivalent connection once more, but again I’d like to see some kind of new spin on it.
