For the hurt/comfort, how about Toby comforting Jim (and vice versa) after Jim's fight with Draal?
So I felt that Toby was the one who would need more comforting after that fight than Jim would. Also good boyfriends remind each other to breathe when they are panicking.
Jim walked slowly, leaning heavily on Toby as he limped home. The fight with Draal had been...rough. Jim knew he had barely come out on top, but at least he had survived and he had won without killing Draal.
As he and Toby walked, Jim found his attention returning again and again to his companion. Every few steps Toby would take a bouncing step like he was about to start dancing. The hand that wasn't holding Jim would occasionally tap out a fast rhythm against his leg before it stilled. Signs Jim knew pointed toward Toby being on the edge of a panic attack but was trying to hide it.
"Are you ok, Toby?" Jim asked.
"Yep! I'm awesomesauce!" Toby said entirely too quickly. "Totally cool. I'm awesomesauce!"
Ooh, repetition. Very close to a panic attack. Jim stopped him while they were still out of sight of their homes. He held Toby’s shoulders and looked him over. After a few seconds of looking at him, Jim took a few over exaggerated breaths, each one expanding his chest as much as possible, then he would noisily exhale. After a few repetitions of that Toby took a few shallow breaths and then slowly started to breathe in rhythm with him.
“Talk to me Tobes. You can tell me whatever you need to.” Jim whispered softly once Toby was breathing a little calmer.
Toby’s face screwed up and tears started flowing down his face.
“You almost died!” Toby shouted. Jim was a little worried that someone would hear them, but he knew trying to quiet Toby would make him shut down again. “Yeah, you won, I’m so happy about that, but you almost died, and I wouldn’t have been able to do anything but watch!”
He spun away, both hands tapping wildly at his legs. As he kept speaking his voice grew hoarse.
“Do you have any idea what that felt like to me? I knew you were going into this thinking you were going to die, and I had to pretend and pretend that I was fine with it. Fine with you dying in front of me. I can’t do that Jim.”
Jim reached towards his best friend, but Toby whirled around before he could.
“Promise me Jimbo! Promise me, you won’t make me watch you get killed. Promise me we’ll do it together. Whatever comes, we face it together. Promise Jim!”
Tears were now pouring down his face and Jim pulled him into a tight hug. He held his friend as tight as he could, while his body rocked in sobs. A few small tears found their way to Jim’s eyes as well.
“I promise Toby. I promise we’ll face things together for now on.”
Unfortunately, not a promise he kept. One of his greatest regrets was making promises to the people he loved, and not keeping them.
