I haven't read all the spoilers yet but they could have done a story that would have led to a Kammy/Robert friendship. Robert when Jack made him run away had nothing, he had to rebuild his life from scratch. Maybe it wouldn't be the same but it would give us a window on Rob's past and they could have bonded on this, Rob could have helped him and we could have a new friendship.
