Pro tip: if you want to avoid or subvert the common tropes of your genre, make sure the alternative is in some way more interesting. Subversion in and of itself is not sufficient.

A bit of an unconventional title for me: ya mystery novel The Cheerleaders. 

I hated it. 

If you want a subversion you’d better make sure it’s more interesting than the premise it would be subverting
