Willingham does a wonderful job capturing the desperation from Isabelle. There are several red herrings leading you to think the story will end one way but Willingham has other plans. The twisty reveal is a "Wait - What?" moment and then the twists keep coming. Glad to have a thriller set here in the southeast. (So many stories from the Low Country are formula romance ) Karissa Vacker gives a fabulous performance with multiple male and female characters. But it's her portrayal of Isabelle that pulls you in - the desperation - the questioning of reality. Vacker adds much to the story. I think Willingham has gotten better with her 2nd novel and it's great to have her as a SC resident. Every Vow You Break is a #backlist book from Peter Swanson. “Abigail has a drunken fling with a man on her bachelorette weekend. He claims that they have a connection and belong together. After her wedding, she honeymoons on a remote island off the coast of Maine. The man from her bachelorette weekend (she doesn’t even know his name) shows up. She is forced to confront him hoping her new husband doesn’t find out. Weird things start happening on the island and her new friend, Jill, goes missing. No one will believe her or help her get off the island. Abigail is on her own now…” Swanson writes a direct, uncomplicated story. It’s nice that there’s only one timeline. There’s an appropriate level if creepy on the island and with the other guests. You’ll probably figure out most of what’s going on but that didn’t take away my enjoyment of the story. Nice performance on the audiobook from Karissa Vacker, especially since most of the characters are men. There is a Brad - he makes drinks at the pool. Are you a fan of unreliable narrators? Main characters making terrible decisions? You'll love the new book from Sandie Jones - The Blame Game. "Naomi is a psychologist specializing in domestic abuse. Her husband often accuses her of crossing the line between professional and personal with her clients. When one of her clients goes missing it looks like Naomi is responsible. She knows the only way to clear her name is to find him ... while she still can." Naomi is a character that makes bad decision after bad decision. For someone who makes a living reading people, she is awfully bad at it. I actually yelled at the book a couple of times because of her terrible decision making. The ending was a little abrupt - not much leadup - and you would think the police would have figured that part out. Jones keeps going with the twists to the final page. Still another great audio performance. Karissa Vacker does an outstanding job with all of the characters especially in that wild scene at the end. A couple of unresolved issues that would've been nice to see worked out. Fans of Jones and unreliable narrators should like this one. A Good Marriage by Kimberly McCreight was a May #botm pick. “Lizzie is working late at her law firm when she gets a collect call from a prisoner at Rikers - who happens to be an old law school classmate. His wife was murdered and the police think he did it. He wants her help. As Lizzie digs into the facts of the case she discovers that Amanda and Zach weren’t what they seemed, and that their friends might also be keeping secrets...” The setup for this book is typical for many current thrillers. Start with the crime and then go back and revisit what led to it while keeping up with the current events. McCreight makes it work here, especially with the audiobook. There’s a lot of commentary on the challenges of a long marriage. All of the main couples have some issues, especially the couple that has an annual sex party (that’s just crazy talk 🤨) And so many secrets 😮 You will not like Zach 😡 but there is always karma. The killer was a surprise 😮 Looking back there were some clues but l didn’t catch them. A very good thriller from McCreight with some great characters.
